Hey guys! I am new to the board but been doing derbies on and off for a few years. I am in Ontario and building my first truck. A 98 chevy shortbox 2wd. The rules are mostly stock. Motor swaps allowed but that is mostly it. Half ton 2wd trucks only. I know the chevs bend behind the cab. I am going to build a full cage. My question.....Should I mount my halo in the cab or between cab and box? I am also going to run bars from halo to frame just in front of axle to help from bending. Do you think this should work? I know they are not the best trucks to use but its what I have. I have read all the threads but there is nothing in particular about building a cage. Any suggestions? Thanks!

A lot of guys I know that run trucks, even though they are mostly more mod trucks have the halo incorporated with the gas tank protector in the bed. If you can mount the halo to the frame and connect it to your dash and windshield bars I would see that helping a lot with the truck bellying out behind the cab. I haven't run a truck in a long time but will help where I can. Good cage is a must in anything.

I was checking out some pictures and I was thinking that is what I will do. I can also add 8 extra body mounts. 4 in box and 4 in cab. Also bolt or weld box to cab with two 3"x3" plates per side. Thanks for the help. Anymore would be appreciated.

Make sure to put a good front bumper on it. The truck bumpers are just chrome skins. Can you alter tailgate or bedsides at all?

I can use a 4"x4" steel tube or an 80's and up car bumper. I am going to use the steel tube. The box sides must stay in original position on a fresh truck. I am going to drop the tailgate to bottom of frame and the weld shut.

What can you use for a rear bumper?

Same as front or if using tube it can only be 3"max square 1/8" thick.

1/8" is kinda light for a bumper in my opinion. For the rear I would put an 80s steel backed bumper on it. Also with a good bumper on the rear I would leave the tailgate stock. Otherwise your hitting with sheet metal attached to the frame instead of heavy steel attached to the frame. If you could push the bedsides down I would say do that.

I agree..1/8" in pretty thin. I wasn't sure if I was going to run a rear bumper or not. I'm now thinking it would probably be best to. No...not allowed to fold over box sides. Thanks for your tips.

Just like on cars rear bumpers are needed to hold the rails together. Otherwise they will be all goofy. And since you can put more body mounts in the bed I would say more towards the back of it.

Another thing to consider when building your cage and everything else mounted in the interior if your cab, us because the body is so much wider than the frame, if it gets t boned the floor buckles and does weird things if your cage doesn't support it properly.

I just finished welding on back bumper. I was going to weld my roll bar to the frame in the box. Then extend a cross bar out farther that I can attach my doors bars to from the dash bar. The door bars will extend from dash bar through the cab and box to the crosser welded to the roll bar. I think this should help a fair amount with bellying.

What do you think would be the best way to mount a tube bumper? Weld it on top of the factory brackets or make new ones? Or another way? Any suggestions?

I would chop off the cheap factory brackets and weld right to the front frame rails if allowed.
