If rules dictate you have to run the factory axle to weld the spider gears remove rear differential mount (4 bolts to body and 2 to rear cover if I remember correctly), remove rear differential cover (roughly 8), weld spider gears, then put back together.
Difficulty is directly proportional to amount of rust. Very easy if not rusty. -I would also think some sort of limiting strap, cable, or chain would be a good idea to help prevent the rear axles from seeing as bad of angles from suspension hanging down too far (or body going up).

So got an answer back from the promoter he said no on the axle swap so yes I'll be welding up the spiders and any other little things I can do to beef it up here and there and try to keep it from blowing apart.

See if the cv's can be beefed up like most front wheelers.

Ok so engine is in and running. Needs a little tuning yet and wiring finished up. Built a drive shaft for it. Had to find a shorter oil filter to clear the steering box but other than that everything fit pretty nice. The trans tunnel is a little narrow but I don't think it will cause any problems. Haven't had a chance to do anything to the rear end yet but I plan on welding up the diff and doing some work to the CV cups.

Sorry I haven't posted anything on this for a while. Car is done and will be running this weekend so we will see how it holds up. I welded a preran bumper on the back and did 2 shallow notches per side. It's still got the factors IRS under it welded posi. Doubled snow tires on the back and I out donuts up front because I noticed that there is an aluminum upper suspension link so trying to keep the target small.

Good luck with it man. I've only ever seen one older merc run and it plowed bad in the rear so hopefully this one will hold up better
