I ran a 79 Malibu with a Pontiac 400 in it and that motor was a bad a$$ motor. It ran great till it desired ta throw the harmonic balancer and half the crank out the front. But if I had a chance I'd run another. I don't think SBC headers will fit. Could be wrong.

That was just my luck. It could of just been the one lucky time but i knew another guy that that's all he ran and win several times with that motor. It was mainly stock and a hell of a screamer. All he did was freshin it up bout every 2 years and he ran it for bout 15 years.

They take heat pretty well. I've had one that melted the plug wires off and was still running. They are torque monsters too.

Slap a timing set and possibly an oil pump in it and let it scream. I've been running a 2 barrel on mine and that seems to work the best.

Good engines, but IMO a smallblock chevy runs a little cooler than a Pontiac engine.I ran one years ago in a 76 Pontiac wagon and in feature it got so hot it locked up tight...Now my dad and uncles have won several heats and top 3 finishes with Pontiac 400's in the past.

Personally, I have sold every Pontiac drivetrain for some pretty decent money in the past. Definitely way more money than you can buy a decent running 350 for. Then all the money you spend on headers and other modifications can be used for future builds. I wouldn't invest any money in a Pontiac motor when everything will cost more and be a bigger pain to deal with because of the cost and availability of parts. Unless you are just a Poncho fan, there is no comparison in Pontiac VS a SBC for derby applications. JMO

All you need is time and a welder and you can make anything happen. This sport is getting too much like Nascar with everybody buying everything. I'm not going to argue the fact that sbc is more convenient and easier to get parts for, but I've never seen a chevy with heads glowing orange that would still run. I personally have seen it happen with a poncho though.
