Hi guys, I was wondering what the opinion is on best bonestock/stock cars for derbying? Im from New Zealand where most cars are japs and the derbys are run with pretty much stock cars (one roll bar behind the drivers seat roof to floor) run on a wet down dirt oval. About to build a mazda astina for my best mate as a 21st present but it doesnt stand a shitshow in hell of being re run so i thought i'd see what you guys thought. Also are there any cars that are notorious for dominating stock classes, i know the reputation of suicide lincolns and 64-66 imperials. Might be worth bringing a car or 2 over haha. Cheers anyway and if its been explained better in another thread please link it in
Just realised i done vamboulsed up posting this in the wrong sub. Shit

The mods are real good here it will be moved before long im sure. Anyway the imperial is the derby car of choice if allowed hands down. For bonestock you really cannot go wrong with any 70s gm product.
I will say if your running jap cars. What may look stock doesnt have to be. Few welds really helps. Are you racing such as bangers or actually derbying? Not sure on new zealand style. Also give us some makes you do have there our compact guys on here are pretty knowledgeable.

Its like bangers that it goes around the oval but its slicked down a fair bit that they cant inflict nearly as much damage. Some models are ford falcons (ea/eb being most common), vn commodores (similar to mid 90s caprices in looks) would be the fullsize cars with mazda 323/familia, honda civic/integra, toyota camry/corolla, other small cars make up the mix. The speedway the astina will be competing at is concrete walled which kills some of the stronger cars if they miss a shot and cant stop. Im gonna see how strenuous the scrutineering is too before i start adding weld in places it shouldnt. That would be the benefit of a yank tank, bugger all of them so no one knows what to look for.
Also in regards to imperials i dont believe there is any banned cars as they probably have never had an imperial run. Utes (think ranchero/el camino style), trucks, vans and 4x4s are banned though because that makes it unfair.

Run it before they do exclude it. Generally they are named exclusively in the rules as not allowed, except where they are running all Imperial Derbies.

Since making this post we have run a 91 mazda astina and a 94 mitsubishi lancer in the ramp race demo derbies. The astina lasted 6 laps before the bonnet came up and then it stopped itself, I destroyed the lancer on lap 2 trying to piledrive someone into the concrete wall and then it wouldnt shift (my seatbelt mount broke which also put me out). Saturday night I am running a 93 opel astra in the ramp race and just last night I picked up a 99 nissan maxima, 3.0 v6 to run in either the ramp race or the demo derby. I'm also trying to get myself into a teams race so i might put the maxima in that if the opportunity comes up. I'm hoping my brother wants to change his car soonish because then we (either me or my brother) will have a 96 mitsubishi lancer to run too
