Gropp, Coyler, Redline, Ziz, Baldwin, Gard, Kinseys, just a couple off the top of my head from reading stuff on here. I don't know any of them personally, and there are thousands of people who can build a decent derby engine. Price, performance, dependability, reputation, and customer service is the difference. You and your local machine shop could likely build something that would work just fine depending on your budget and expectations. What matters more than horsepower is proper carburation, proper timing, and adequate cooling. A properly tuned stock motor with some decent gears is more than the average derby car builder needs. JMO

Thanks, that answered my question. Gropp is to hard to deal with, he's out. Baldwin to much $$ I'll look into the others listed.

Leave me out of this soon to be mess! I spend enough time getting dirt out and fixing bent linkages on carbs as it is.... The average derby guy needs to learn how to change a fuel filter and set a throttle stop is more like it!

The tighter you pull the chain the quicker the weak link is exposed. Most of the Ohio guys with the stacked trophy rooms used a well running and maintained stocker. Hell we know a guy with more trophies than you can count who ran a 305 with a two barrell to many many victories. And this dude aint no bagger-he was and is a pure maddog. My advice is get a well maintained small bore, figure out its tendencies and run it. The local guy here even buried that 305 with an impromptu funeral in his yard.
An appetite for destruction is more than an awesome album.

Thanks, that answered my question. Gropp is to hard to deal with, he's out. Baldwin to much $$ I'll look into the others listed. I'm quite easy to deal with. Follow my recommendations, don't ask how I do what I do, don't ask for your product a day before the show, and don't tell me you want me to build an engine according to your specs with parts that you saw in a free catalog which would never win anything. Same formula has produced the most successful derby engines. No need to change.

Oh, and if you tell me you want your engine to be successful because it sounds cool, I won't even respond to your email or phone call.

well this will be a pissing contest anyway Coyler from Illinois does a good job... now if you're wealthy and like the sound of a motor and want alot of horsepower just go to Roush/Yates Performance who builds NASCAR race engines

Anymore reviews on this thread? I’m in the market for a new engine and town between colyer and gropp and a place called BDR engines.. Baldwin is to much $$$ for what it is.. strongly leaning towards a colyer .. who has had the most luck with what builder? Performance and customer service/ warranty etc...
