Mine is now wired according to the schematic above. Appears to be charging, and after sitting for 2 days it fired right up tonight. So it doesn't appear the alternator is putting any kind of draw on the battery at rest. Thanks guys!
Stromi, maybe sticky this thread on the tips and tricks thread?

I just took mine off less than an hour ago.. usually our one and done heats don't run over 45 minutes and on a large tractor battery, I charge it the night before so really no need for it anyways. Just gives me another belt from my crank to the water pump

Just so we're clear, this is on my figure 8 car which is why I wanted to do it the "correct" way as opposed to the "derby" way. I have wired them on derby cars before where it was only for 1 night at a time. But with the figure 8 car there are times that I'm running 3 races a week and don't have time to be dicking around with a battery every night. When it's time to go, it's time to go.
Thanks again for the help!

Instead of having two wires to the battery from the alternator, I simply "jump" # 2 to POST on the alternator and run it to the Battery+ and leave # 1 covered. However, this drawing is better design because my method does not allow you to turn on/off. I will now have to follow this diagram. Thank you, guys.

Which of the 2 terminals is connected to the round post on the back of the alt?

The bottom one. Its the larger of the two wires coming out of the plug.
