I've never ran an alternator and a dead battery has never taken me out.

Wonder if there are different statistics based from fullsize drivers and compact drivers. As far as having alternator problems take them out.

I knocked my alternator off a 94 Toyota Camry with my front bumper. It did not take me out though.

Have run the same crank, water pump, alternator, serpentine belt setup since day 1 and never a problem other than tossing a belt. All on full size with GM motor/tranny combos. Have bent, twisted, crossed, and touched about anything you can think of. Burned up a distributor switch once when pinched against the firewall. Burned up the wiring to the electric rad fan up to the fuseable link once because the hood bent funny. But thats it. Never been able to point to the alternator and say "yup, thats what took me out". I will still run one with no expectation of problems.

Wonder if there are different statistics based from fullsize drivers and compact drivers. As far as having alternator problems take them out. You may be on to something there. Many Fwd cars have the alternator right up front, I can think of a handful off the top of my head. And even though they would most likely be fuel injected and use more power I would still go without the alternator if possible. This past year on my escort I removed the alternator completely, and didn't run serp. belt. (timing belt driven water pump) I wrapped the crap out of the power wire with electrical tape and zip tied it between the valve cover and intake on the back of the engine. I don't even think the battery was fully charged the day of the show. loaded up, drove around the pits for a little while, ran my heat, had 3 stoppages that I shut my car off and restarted it, drove off the track onto the trailer, drove it off the trailer the next day, drove around a bit, pulled it back on the trailer. ...never lost power. The only thing that I didn't have drawing power that most normally would is a fan. I decided to pull the fan for clearance reasons. I run a single tractor battery from Rural KIng, I believe its around 800cca. Unless you are running stupid long heats, it is not required with a good battery so I would rather get rid of some wiring and get a little spending money from the core guy with it. If you have always ran one, and never had issues, and thats just what you do... to each there own.

I run my alternator wire though a piece of last years fuel line. I use steel line with short connections. I'm thinking about zip tying the wires to the valve cover because not all of the shows I run allow carb protectors. Or make a bracket to bolt to the valve cover.

I had a 90 ford escort back many moons ago ran my very first derby and needless to say I didn't know much about anything derby wise and I shut the car off because some guy had a fire in his car. went to restart and click. after the derby I did a teardown and the alternator had not been charging the batter the fuse was still in tact so I cut the main wire at the alternator and wired it directly to the battery and it charged the battery perfectly. went out and won the next derby with that car.

I ran a bubble Vic a few years back. Guy got up on my hood and pushed the alternator into the upper intake plenum and broke the intake. That took me out.
