Wanting to build a chevy 302. I have a small journal 327 i also have a 283 crank. I want to take and bore the block i have a set of .30 over pistons for a 350. Now my question is can i use those pistons? And if i can what size rod do i need? Id be great to use those pistons instead of buying $550 pistons for a chevy 302. Rods are way cheaper! Can anyone help me with this?

No you cannot and there's no off the shelf rod that will allow you to. It'll be the same price for special rods vs the Pistons if not more.
302s are my favorite SBC.
The cheapest way to build one is with a one piece main 350 and the crank and rods from a 4.3 V8 and then you can use standard 5.7 Rod 350 Pistons.

So im better off finding a 283 using the crank and rods and buying the special 302 pistons. Another question for you guys if i go the route i just stated what kind of cam would you use? im tossing around the idea of putting on vortec heads on this 302. It will be going into a derby car. Also btw.

You can use the crank and block you said you have above just buy the appropriate Pistons for your rod length.
IMO Vortec intake runners aren't big enough to handle the camshaft that 302 needs to be taking full advantage of the RPMs
302s don't start making really good power til about 6,000 RPM

Sounds like you know your stuff! what heads would run? And what cam? And if i wanted to put vortec heads on could i have em put bigger valves in like 2.02 intake valves?

Ive just done a crap ton of research on these.
383Sonoma on here is the cam guy and has the experience with the Vortecs.
Its not so much the valve size its the intake runner size. If I remember right, the stock runner is 170cc on Vortecs, IMO to take full advantage of a 302 you need to use a cam thats too large for Vortecs, youll choke it.
May I ask though, why are you building one? Every time Im about to pull the trigger on one I dont because dollar for dollar it doesnt produce like a 350 will. Unless you do it the cheap way like I mentioned above.

Im thinking about building one bc theres really no stoke to them and i think it would be one hell of a derby car motor the high RPMS it could put out and with the right rear end gears i think a guy would have the perfect combination. And a motor that would scream and be able to last. I have a built 350. But seams like everyone else around here has better high RPM motors.

Winning derbies doesn't require a high rpm engine. You're about to spend 5 grand building an engine that's going to be gutless where you need your power. Sure it may sound cool.... But that doesn't win lol.

We have a pair of 355's built identical except for heads and one will turn 8,000 and the other 7,500 idk how much more rpm you want or need than that.... just bc they will do it doesn't mean we run them up there either lol

Don't let anybody talk u out of it. If u want to build a 302 build one. 302s are cool as it gets. Everybody has a 355 or a 383. I think it's cool you wanna try something different. I've always wanted to do one myself just haven't got the chance to yet. Now I'm not trying to say that it will be a more powerful engine than a 355 or 383. But it's different and I like different. Just my opinion

Super chevy magazine built one to original specs and it made 357hp and 333ft/lbs of torque at 6700 rpm. Then they put a nasty roller cam afr 210cc eliminator heads, a single plane high rise intake with a 750 carb. And a n upgraded oiling system and msd ignition. 519 hp at 7400 Rpms and 400 ft/lbs of tourque at 6300 Rpms. Pretty sweet article. Just google super chevy 302 and it comes right up.

I dont have my note book infront of me but i did some figuring on 302 compression height and stuff like that, if i remember right you can run 6.125 rods and run a piston made for a 383 with 6" rods and it gets you real close as far as compression height i think it sat it down .020 which is no big deal since you can just zero deck it if you want and boom done. Like i said dont quote me because im not near the note book will all my calculations in it.
