Well, last weekend, down to 2. Having the better car, I drove myself right into position to be pinned. Does that count?

Two years ago, I won my first derby and I was getting ready to drive off the track and it died and was like what the crap and I was out of gas.... That was close

Had the vent on my gas tank close on me once. Not sure how it happened. Got back to the pits, opened the vent and it ran like a top.

My boy also had an embarrassing moment last weekend. We all drove onto the track & shut 'em down for a calcutta. Afterward, he cranked & cranked, but it wouldn't start. I pushed him back to our pit. Ran great as soon as he turned the ignition switch to the "on" position.

Well I have been doing it awhile and have a few of my own, but let's start with the wife's stories...
Back when Jeff Brown had outlaw derbies at our local fair in Ohio, I built her a 65 Plymouth fury. 12 leafs, all seams welded thing was cheated to the hilt ( I wanted to make sure she was safe;). I was afraid to let her drive it before the derby because of how rough it rode. So the day of the derby she takes it through inspection and brings it back to fix some stuff. She gets through inspection the second time and takes into lineup ok. She gets on the track and can't find reverse. She drives over the logs and is done. Second night she figures out shifter and drives through a metric wagon with the front end and gets hung up. She called it a year then.
The next year we break the car out and I decide that I am going to go through the engine cause it had been run about 3 years since the last rebuild. Get it back together and it runs good. She drives it on the track and makes a couple hits, then it starts to sound bad and run like a wire or something came off. Then it started to knock and smoke and shoot flames.... You HAVE to put both valve stem locks in. An engine will not run long with only one. Junked a .030 over small block 400:(
Mine have been stellar as well. My first derby I drove over the logs after missing someone. Second derby I had a 76 caddy. Big old boat. Decided I was going to try and take on Ziz and quickly had my A$$ handed to me... Live and learn!

First derby i built a hard tbird, get down to the last 4 cars out of 12 or so.. made a hit and the car died. Starter button is sparking everywhere and car wouldnt crank. Got timed out so i broke my stick. Looked behind me and the gas tank ripped out from the floor. Turned upside down with a ton of gas under my seat. The starter button turned out to be 6v. Damn rookie gas tank mounts cost me atleast 3rd!

My cousin beat my best last night. Was running a ford aspire 2 door. Got lined up in his heat and the car started smoking horribly like it was buring oil in the cylinders and lots of it. Dropped the flag and shes smoking like a chimney. Made 3 hits and they red flagged the heat and black flagged him and broke his stick for some stupid safety deal. Dumbest thing ive ever heard

2 years ago built a 1989 Honda Accord, day before derby bought steel timing cover to replace the plastic on, next day got excited and loaded up car on trailer made sure everything was good to go; full tank of gas good wire connection everything welded good. Get to the derby and realize i forgot to change the plastic cover out. Got almost to the end 3 cars out of 20 remaining I look over a buddy full tracks the fender and motor mount goes through the plastic cover. Lesson learned; never run plastic timing cover that are next to motor mount.

I had a very well built car. I spent more time on this car than any other in the past. My torque converter crapped out the night before and couldn't find another. The new transmission was 15 miles away and we started changing it out at 1 am. After we got the new one home I had to make a new pinion and flange for my slider. It's 2:30 in the morning and everything is "ready" to go. I made three solids hits and got nailed pretty hard in the passenger side. Door is now 2 inches away from batteries. I start the car and go to take off and nothing. My weld broke on the pinion and thus taking out the tail shaft housing. I think a bad weld is very embarrassing. Ugh!!!
Drive it like you stole it!!

Rules said I need a fan shroud, so I put a piece of sheet metal on the rad support and screwed it down with self tappers. Probably the third time I ran it, that piece of sheet metal came loose and knocked my dist cap off. Fixed it two days later and took car to another derby. Won my heat, front bumper fell off in main and eventually my fuel pump got broken for a third place finish in main.

I went to a derby a few years ago with a pre ran and was going to finish it off. Well the night before they got 3 inches of rain. Well I thought oh yeah my tires are meaty enough to get around.... not so much, too high of gear and too much motor. Got put in the ditch by 2 stock cars right off the bat. All I could do was laugh.

This past weekend I had a major leak by the tbi in my 89 century and forgot to seal the hole. Well the water got in the tbi and eventually stalled the motor for a day. Had the best built car and by far the best built and forgot to fix a leak. Lesson: fix all leaks
