Unless you are going to build a good leaf pack and tie your cage to it, the nose is the business end

There isn't really a cross member to speak of. Make one & do it up like a Mustang 2.

maybe im wrong, a maverick and a mustang 2 are nearly identical cars? . . . i just picked up a 74 mav and was wondering about this too. Tie the cage into the front leaf hangers if possible. chain down the rear or add a stiff spring pack. . . flat leaf would help im sure. No need to shorten these? semi stiff front bumper(stiff enough not to u shape into the rad but soft enough to absorb some of the hard blows) and some nice bumper shocks. am i missing anything?

You are not too far off, gimp. With the exception of the engine cross member (or lack thereof), the are very much the same up front. I do not know why, but the ass ends are much softer than a Stang 2, so yeah, if you are going backward at all, a good leaf pack tied to the cage is in order.
As far as I know, every Maverick had an 8" under it from the factory. Whether that is enough is a matter of personal preference and experience. An 8 is good for me, but with my driving style, and our large tracks out this way, I am usually good at being on the giving end of wheel shots.
The bumpers on the 74 & newer are half decent for being a true compact bumper. The 73 & older bumpers are little more than just thick tin.
Never seen one shortened, but it couldn't hurt. A 4.3 with headers is too wide to sit between the shock towers. When thinking about buying a Maverick, be thinking of a 4 cylinder or a straight 6. If a V6-8 is all you have, you'll be using stock manifolds pointing down.

Ok thanks all I can do to the leaf pack is tap the hell out of them any more pointers Took me a few days to see it.... tape. Yes, tape the hell out of them. If you can get away with adding some clamps under the tape, do it. Chain the humps if you can. They tend to push straight in behind the axle. Eventually, when you are hitting with your tires out back, it will buckle in front of the axle, breaking a u-joint if you don't have a slider.

I got lucky with mine, it had the stock carbed inline 6 and auto trans in it. was daily driven until the master cylinder went out a few weeks ago.
The lack of a crossmember. . . would anyone by chance have a picture of a stang 2 engine crossmember i could see? i would imagine that by adding one to a mav would help it considerably.
It will be nearly impossible to shorten mine as it has the stock inline 6. . . unless i move it back and add a head protector or cut the firewall out and move the engine backwards. But we will see when i go to build the car. I can see shortening one with a 2.3 very easy. . . i just have absolutely NO luck with 2.3s.

Mine currently has an engine in it, but I will run (or walk) out & see if it is picture friendly. Same with my Maverick. It has half an engine, but I will look.
Another major difference is shock tower location and Mustang has rack & pinion. Maverick does not.

Mustang 2......much shorter shock towers outside the engine bay, tied to the cross member.

With no factory cross member, one could get very creative with motor mounts.
