I've been using an inline pump for a early 90s s10. 4-7 psi and don't need a regulator. $80 from napa

Have a block mounted pump with a return. Can I swap for one without a return without to much change? Also what would I have to change. Yes, nothing

I usually mount the tank, through bottom of the tank to a rubber splice to 3/8 copper line electrical clamped two or three spots up to the firewall then a garden hose covering the copper at the point of the firewall then run it up to another splice to connect to the fuel pump. I would do the same set up with an inline pump aswell. Use copper, worth every penny if used with care!
