Wondering if anyone has done this and if it is a good or bad idea. What are the pros and cons of advancing a distributor and how to do it.

There are so very good books out on the market that go into detail about all aspects of engine timing. Read up on it, before you go changing your timing you have to understand the fundamentals of engine timing.

Considering the guy that posted that has 2 degrees in high performance engines, I think I would take his advice over your "just play with it" theory... That's something you are to do in the bathroom, not the garage...

I know a guy in Indiana that helps promote demos. He was telling me the "Pros" Are killing the sport.
Starting to understand what he meant.
You guys time how you like. I will play with my junk and have fun

That is correct 13 ..I got back into camping and stuff. Then I got divorced. Then I bought 2 Shovelhead Harleys.. And now theres this tank in my back yard I been saying I was gonna run for a few years in a row. That boy in my pictures turned 18 A few weeks ago. Life happend my friend. But I still love demo And I been wrenching my own 200$ rolling junkpiles for years. I escaped from the bodyshop and still love wrenching. But since I dont run Hi Po in my pickup..Why would I drop 10 g into a demo motor for a no weld run ? Sorry you guys are turning on someone that was just trying to help. Thats what kills a site

Sorry to hurt your feelings, im just saying that he has training in it that's up to date and recent things have changed in the last 5 years. No one told him to guy spend 10G on a new engine. im not sure where you get calling me a pro, If you read any post of mine, im the one who tells people that not all derbies are weld them to shit and back with $50,000 setups.

My feelings are fine. Apolagy accepted. There were other reasons I quit as well. The guy that I learned most of my car tricks from had a tag team going and a flagman in his pocket. He still runs here now...and we dont get along in the ring hahahaha...I bet he has my number...I will give him he11 if I can .
3 of them 10+ year old demo tapes I posted were 10 000 1st place prizes.
When the flagger are playing favorites and towing cars in on trailers..The math is pretty easy.
I come here Because it intrests me. I might learn a new trick. I have shared a couple that you guys never thought of ;-) Thru pm when I was asked.
By the way , the only car I had that ran real real nice was the yellow polkadot buick. Cause it wasent pushing as much oil ;-) And I learn as I go

Take that to the bank I run a $300 engine for example... ford at that... The idea is for the engine not to stall and NOT have to start it up again...

I used to advance the timing on my street/strip drag car because I ran it at higher RPM's. On a derby application I'm not sure my driving style would benefit from it being advanced as I don't keep my RPM's that high. If your a heavy footed driver that keeps the engine wrapped up it might help in that category. Just my $.02. Barclay Wilt.

If I told you the timing im running in my motors you would A.) laugh at me or B.) not believe me. You can do it however you want, all I was saying is that its nice to know how engine timing works. so far the longest I had it running was 45 mins with no water pump belt or rad, it dieseled for a bit once i shut it down...hit the starter and it fired right up like nothing happened, no pumping of the carb needed.
