My advice: if ya don't know, ASK someone that does! If you are given advice from someone who has been there, USE IT! DONT believe everything you read on WeCrash! Learn how to drive in reverse-any monkey can drive going forward! Everybody likes being in the parade, but only a few know what it takes and put in the quality time to get there! Safety first and paint last! Beer and buddies can make or break a build-sometimes having both at the same time is not a good thing! lol The main thing is to have fun, but stupidity is painful and embarrassing!

Things I have learned is find something the works for you take what everyone one is saying and make something out of it that you can use. I always look at how others are building you wont see every thing they do but that's fine use the little things.I have been in the derby world for 13 yrs I don't know everything no one does but most times if you ask some one for advice nicely they will give out pointers.Another thing is there should never be enemys when its all said and done be a good sport get out and shake hands keep it too the track.

Here's a piece of advice all can benefit from.....don't wait till a week before the derby to start building a car.....that's what burns a lot of people out on the sport and then on top of that they wonder why something stupid always takes them out...or tries to say your car is cheated.
A well put together car will and should put a thrown together car out of business everytime jmo

Always get the bug the week before and can never get things ready.

If I do it turns out to be a shitbox and everything goes wrong during build... I swear brakes are my worst enemy

A well put together car will and should put a thrown together car out of business everytime jmo 100% Agree, I know a lot of guys who do this every year. Always get the bug the week before and can never get things ready. There have always been guys that fit this description for as long as I can remember, but it seems like in recent years I see it more than ever. They catch the fever a week (or less) before the show, and even though it goes badly they don't really learn anything because as soon as it is over they disappear until a week before the next show. I have a rule (admittedly it is not iron clad) that the car has to be ready two weeks before the show or I skip it. I do not like the mad scramble, the all nighters, the stress where everything goes wrong and there's no time to fix it. It's not uncommon for me to finish a car in January that will get run in October. But I can't say that my way is the only way because I know guys who actually prefer the last minute approach- they feel like they work best under the pressure of an impending deadline, or they enjoy the stress, I dunno. It takes all kinds I guess; so knowing what works for you is going to be a part of your enjoyment of the whole derby experience.

Don't let the guys that always win and team up against everyone look at your car. Last spring one of them checked out my car thought he was being nice give me tips or compliments. Next thing I know officials came over and made me take off my tires or I couldn't run. They were bias ply in a stock show passed thru inspection.

The thing that I can't get over is no matter how many derbies I run there is always something I over look. I forgot to zip tie the distributor cap, made 2 hits was out. So, my advise is to double check everything including the little things, hose clamps wire connections battery cables and make sure everything is secured along with making the car safe and run to your best ability. Thanks, I never thought of zip ties I had a cap get busted and put me out, with zip ties it may still have run on a few cylinders

Not only zip ties, but after them, I use a bunch of duct tape, and cover the whole cap. Helps keep water out, and just might hold the cap together, if it gets cracked. And I also cover the coil with tape.

If your running in heats... Check your driveshaft clearances between them ..adjust as required as your cars wheelbase shortens This would be more for us guys that are not permited to have sliders. Can change to a shorter shaft ..or longer trailing arms to pull stuff back....

Who couldn't use an extra inch or two every now and then....LOL
