Still learning... and I found out that its a good idea to let the tractors pull you out of the arena even if you think your car can make it back to the trailer. My transmission line broke when the loader pulled the car I was hung up on off and I fried the transmission driving back to the pits while it was spewing fluid under the car and ran it out of fluid.

Getting away from car tips here, but any advice on keeping your head while you're out there? And for those of us who get nervous?

Most of the jitters go away when the flag drops, and you make the first hit/or get hit.

Just finished my rookie season. And it was a blast! Here are some tips from a rookie.
1. Built with somebody that has derbied before. This helped me a lot!!
2. You donk know it all! I thought that I could build a car that would junk everybody. Boy was I wrong.
3. Pay attention! Driving and building. I've been taught that you cant build good cars with half ass work. Look how other people build there cars, always up for new ideas.
4. When driving slow down. Everything goes 1000000 miles an hour. Breath.
5. I'm not just saying this because in on here, but use this sight. If you don't know it you can usually find it on wecrash.
6. Double and triple check all wiring, lines, brakes, gas tank, and anything that can be adjusted in the pits quick. It's the worst when something small takes you out.

Getting away from car tips here, but any advice on keeping your head while you're out there? And for those of us who get nervous? seat time! it will never go away but it gets better the more you run. the track really slows down once you have a few runs under your belt. also watching video of yourself running is very helpful. you can see what bad hits you took, what hits you shouldve taken and what hits you shouldve/couldve avoided. I found this year that myself, i get less nervous not running at the hometown track. i think there is less pressure to do well when you dont know anybody there.

Interesting, because I think I'd feel more nervous away from a home crowd. I'd feel like an odd man out. Thanks for the tips!

Getting away from car tips here, but any advice on keeping your head while you're out there? And for those of us who get nervous? Probably different for everyone. I would say dont wait till you're out there to get calmed down. Prepare in advance. If people make it worse, get away from them and find alone time. Some sit in the car and get in the zone several minutes before the start. Some listen to music. I still know people who for years still have to take a leak and some even throw up. I personally like to stay focused. I am checking things on the car right up to start time. I try to stay loose and have fun but not distracted. When you're out there, the jitters go away. Pick a strategy that works for you and keep reminding yourself out there to stick to the plan. If the plan isn't working, alter it but dont get all bent out of shape. Its a derby, keep it fun and shake hands when your done.

^^^^^ Very good advise... I might look a little wierd before I get strapped in because I have a thing that I pace back and forth and stretch then get in the car buckle up put on helmet and this is my time til drop of flag... I don't check out others cars before hand just in the lineup from my office...

I go and sit in my car and talk to it... Nerves still go nuts but sitting in it before hand it's just what I like to do...

Always drill holes in your bumper shocks to let the gas and oil out before welding them.

Stromi 121 I like this thread. It nice to see experience drivers actually trying to help out new drivers for a change. On this board it seems like we get beat up but a certain few so we just stop asking questions until we stray away from this sport because of the bullies on this site and in the pits. It's nice to see people actually trying to help out and get younger drivers into this sport by helping them out and not belittling them. Thanks for helping this sport to grow in a positive way!
