Rules say I can’t move core support but I get what your saying I’m guess it makes it harder to bend down. Seems like the bumpers I weld on tend to bend down but still stay on

I have a 85 grand marquis starting out. any advice on gearing, building the 302 or go with a 350? I know a 302 will run cooler but not as much torque as a 350. thanks in advance on any tips

If yes, a 456 is a good all around gear to have. For the motor, go with a chevy small block. It's not even a choice.

A couple things to consider for stock GM rearends: -Rearends with bolt in axles are preferred (as opposed to c-clip axles) as the axle will not come out if breaks...these are identified by a noticeable bulge at the end of the axle tube right behind the backing plate where the bearing resides. -Ring and pinion gear sets are readily available for GM 10 bolts, but not for 12 bolts. -12 bolt rearends are heavier duty than 10 bolts (bigger axles and housings), but most usually come with a higher factory gear ratio (2.73) than most stock 10 bolts (3.08).

And then there is the hybrid 10 bolt BIA with 12 bolt BIA axles. This gives you bigger 12 bolt axles with 10 bolt gear selection. This is preferred at shows with stock rearend rules or limited budget. This can be accomplished by buying a spool from postal mopar or by having some 10/12 c clipper side gears turned or grinded down to fit in the 10 bolt carrier that also has to be ground or turned down to accept the bigger axles. I recently built one and it took parts from four different rears to make it happen. Luckily I had all the parts so cost was minimal. However for many people the spool is the easiest and cheapest rout if building a 10/12 hybrid is what you desire.

My current advice for rookies. I don't know shoot. Most people on here don't know shoot. The problem is that the people who do no shoot will not share that information. Mostly because they are scared that their competitors will benefit from them sharing that information. There is plenty of information if that is better than the information on here. But, good luck getting anyone to tell you that information. We are here try to share the information that is available and somewhat common knowledge. You take that information and build from there. Nobody knows everything. But general information is a dam good start.

The best thing I can say is learn to drive. You put a good driver in a POS in they will still finish good. Put a bad driver in the best car an they will waste it. JMO

The thing that I can't get over is no matter how many derbies I run there is always something I over look. I forgot to zip tie the distributor cap, made 2 hits was out. So, my advise is to double check everything including the little things, hose clamps wire connections battery cables and make sure everything is secured along with making the car safe and run to your best ability. to quote this guy probably best beginner advice ie dont get distracted when ur friend shows up and not put in a lower ball joint bolt not fun to try and find a suitable replacement or to pick needle bearings out of the dirt
