if this is your first car, I would consider things like home made fan shrouds to be of a lower priority than a lot of other things. It's fine if you have time after taking care of the big ticket items I guess but I would advise against trying to have the best car on the track your first time out. How does the car run?

Very valid point, as usual.

Do you put a piece on the bottom of your shroud too? I made one this year but didn't put one. Didn't know if it made a difference.

That would be personal preference. I would not put a lower on a vic or impala. However a Caddy is a different animal.

have you watched the show where you plan to run it? How long do the heats typically last?
A shroud without a doubt will improve cooling efficiency over no shroud, but if the heats are less than 20 minutes or so it is a waste of time and effort. If the show is a bag fest and you're trying to win then you'll need to keep it cool longer than that, but for your first time out I'd probably recommend planning on having a heavy right foot and just have fun. COncentrate on making the car run well and take care of the basics and the safety items, then hammer down. If you stay with the hobby you can start learning lessons from each build and your build task list gets longer with the detail items such as home made fan shrouds.
