No need to run one. Never ran out of battery power either with elec fans. No alt also means less wires, less belts and less problems. Thats because you cant drain a battery in 5-10 mins!! LoL

I run one, but Friday night was the 2nd time I have had the alt wire get caught on sheet metal and arc off. Last time it smoked the battery, this time the wires went up in flames. Do you all wrap your wires in a way that they don't get caught on anything?

I run one sometimes. But only to keep the water pump belt tight.

I run them for the simple fact that I like having as much voltage as possible running anything elctrical in the car. Been tested numerous times to show even hp gains going from 12 volts to 14+

never have, taken them off of every engine ive ran.... I run 2 semi batteries linked together so i put out 1500 cranking amps... i run both electric fan and electric fuel pump off of it and no issues... only had one engine ever not restart because of lost cranking amps, but that was the mopar starters fault, as soon as it cooled off i fired the car up and drove it on the trailer.... until the day my batteries go dead in our 15 minute heats ill keep doing what works for me...

I've seen plenty of guys run 90 minute heats and features that are even longer than that with no alternator and a regular red top optima battery powering the distributor and starter. Most run another battery to power accessory items like fuel pumps, electric fans, etc. I used to run one all the time but don't anymore because for all practical purposes you really don't need it. Pros and cons to both sides though.

Pros and cons to both sides though. Pros) Most cars come with a working alternator. (if not its a cheap fix) Cons) Optimas or diesel batteries cost big bucks.(for the average builder) For the big time professionals with huge money, good sponsors, and huge horsepower, no alternator might be OK. For the rest of us, from entry level builders to the cost conscious alternators just make since. A decent alternator will keep any decent battery charged long enough to win any derby. This is just my opinion on this subject.

This is how i have set all of my cars up in the past, never had a problem, our heats don't last that long. I'd have an old car battery to use outside of the derby, morning of, go to the grain truck pull the batteries then put them back after the derby.

Has anyone ran a msd 6al box and no alt Make sure that 6Al gets all the voltage you can feed it, or it simply isn't doing you any good. We ran ours for years at 17-18 volts in circle track racing.

Do you all wrap your wires in a way that they don't get caught on anything? Always wrap or protect wires/cables where they meet metal. Duct tape, old garden hose, whatever. Try to run everything thru to same area. Keep it simple and clean. Ask the guys what took them out.....Battery cable, wires grounded out, kinked line etc. Its usually something stupid.
