GM alternators have a voltage regulator inside..
starting about,,1984,, 5,, ford alternators have internal regulators..
so bigblocker,, your older ford alt. needs the voltage regulator,,,
as for wiring,, it came with the car,,,
or get the new style alt,
#2,,,, we haven't used a charging system on a derby car for 15 years,,

As mentioned, no regulator will over charge and burn up battery.
I personally prefer to setup any engine with 3 wire GM, just so I don't have to constantly recharge battery. But if I don't have time to set up a charging system on a car, I don't lose any sleep over it......good heavy duty truck or gel cell battery will take care of it, assuming you aren't running 2 hour features.

Just get a 1 wire hookup alternator and that will solve all questions. GM alternators with the built in regulator, can be converted to a single wire hook up, for about 35 bucks from jegs, very simple to do.

This is going to be my first year running without an alternator. I'm going to run two batteries. I hope that's enough to run my fuel pump and electric fans

So what are the other 2 wires for? because i hooked my new gm alternator up with both posts going to the main post and that wire going to the positive on the battery and the alternator burned up and i just got it at oreilys yesterday or so so what am i doing wrong? because i first hooked up 1 wire to the main post and checked the volt gauge and nothing then hooked the other post not the fld to the main post with the original 1 wore. again no charge then hooked both posts up to the main post and original 1 wire and again no charge and then the alternator burned up so... what am i doing wrong? and i ran the motor up to 5000 and no charge so... im lost.

Do you have it hooked up this way or tried this way? Are you sure your getting the right alternator? I don't know what your doing wrong. My brother and i have been running this setup ever since he started derbying. We get like 14. something volts coming form the wire going to the battery. I hate it though its a chevy product but will have a ford alt on within the month. It has worked good for us we run 2 fans and fuel pump and one 1000 amp battery. I think we have only went through 3 alts between the both of us since 95' and the last one was smashed between frame and engine block. The other two wires one is what tells the regulator to let current through or to charge the other wire is the wire that carries the changing current to the battery from the alternator. If you one wire plug has a diode that stops it from back feeding into the regulator.
