Okay so I've got an astre wagon. Still has whatever 4banger engine and trans(iron duke?) but have a rebuilder 2.3. Which is the better engine? Also, cars sitting way back in the trees and I haven't looked up under it. How are the stock rears? Have plenty of 8" fords laying around. Are they leaf spring cars?

If it has an over head cam, it is a GM 2.3; if it is overhead valve, then it is a 2.5 iron duke. The 2.5 is as good as a Ford 2.3...I don't think one is better than the other, with the exception that there are more after market parts available for the Ford. The GM 2.3 will only survive so many times getting hot.....iron head, aluminum/silicon block. 2. The GM 7.5 isn't bad per se, but an 8 will be better. 3. It is a coil sprung car.

They are coil cars. It will be a c-clip rear, not sure what it is. If it is more of a stock show I think you would be alright leaving it in. If its been sitting... be on the look out for rust. If its rusty, do everyone a favor and crush it. As far as the engine.. If it is a 2.5 and runs fine, I would leave it in. If its the 2.3 ohc, I am not familiar with it.

From what I could tell and what I could see it was fairly rust free. Pretty much compacts around here are all mod classes, in the sense that everyone builds the sh*t out of their cars if they know what they're doing, and there's always the chain and bolt escort/festiva guys that show up. It's either derby it, or shove a big block Mopar in it for sh*ts and giggles. From what I gather, build the front like a Mopar, and the ass like a metric GM wagon? Oh and are the coils about the same size as a full size? Would truck coils be beneficial in saving the back from Turning into a snow plow?

Attachment DeletedI have the opportunity to pick up a 73 vega for cheap. I don't know anything about these cars I'm just getting into mini's this will be my first one. The rear end plowing dirt worries me. I will be running a stock show. Gas, battery moved, 2 pins through frame front back, no welding doors, can notch and pre bend, creasing allowed, compact bumper, bumpers welded to brackets brackets welded to frame or hardnose, roll cage can only be bolted to floors and doors. Im going to be running against chain and bang FWD's. What can you guys tell me about it? read they have 2.3l in them, how do they compare to ford 2.3l. Don't know if this one runs buying a couple pintos might be able to get one of those to run if they are better. Are these vegas leaf or coil? how are the stock bumpers? Would it be good for this one heat show? Attachments:

^^^Just about dejavu there...from one page back, with a couple of exceptions:
1. 74^ Pinto tougher in stock from.
2. 73 & older GM bumpers are little more than tin.

Maybe a loop hole, but Pontiac made the sunbird wagon until 78-9......the rules are the same for compact and full size and 77^ gms are allowed hump plates;)

I was unaware of a rwd Sunbird wagon. I had to look it up. That means I don't have to learn anything else today And 77 was the final production year for the Astre wagon, so not a bad idea. And yes, do the back like a metric wagon. Just make sure it is started upward at your notch/dimple.

Im new to all the compact stuff. But I found a 72 vega wagon gt with a 2.3. Its going to be a pretty stock show, but there will be gremlins and lots of fwds. Would this car be too soft for this type of derby?
