Homemade bumper on a wire car?? Been ran twice, both times used front whole time. Still straight. So whoever says you need soft bumpers for soft cars is wrong!

Which would you rather give first, the bumper or the frame? I'd rather my bumper give and keep my frame straight.

Everybody has their preference. Hard bumpers keep your frame straighter. It holds the frame rails together better. Frame wont twist as easy since the bumper is harder than the frame.
Take 2 pieces of 1/16 sq tube and align them as a frame would be. Weld a piece of 1/2" on it. And if i hit that 50 times i guarentee it will hold together better and stay straighter than using a piece of 1/16".

I get exactly what you're saying, but this isn't a drag car. A little bit of frame flex won't hurt anything.

Yeah it will eventually give. But in my opinion your frame should last longer. I emphasize should. Its all how you build it

Little late, but back on page eleven I was talking about a 76 Tbird front bumper. Found out it was a 77. I put it on the front of a 69 Lincon continental mark 3 with the tbird I beam mounts. I didn't think ahead and didn't compress the mounts. The I beams were obviously a week point and two hits bent the bumper up infront of the radiator.Didn't do too bad for running with IMPS. The only think that stopped me was the rear fenders ended up rubbing the rear tires. cut the fenders and ran it two weeks later. Ran good. Won some money. Bumper was still straight. Put it back on the thunderbird with new mounts. Welded the bumper to the mounts and the mounts to the frame. Ran it last week against imperials and the front bent up right behind the weld for the mounts. Again infront of the radiator. Going to run it in two weeks and see if we can't bring home some money. Just want to put it out there that 77 Thunderbird bumper is trong and straigh about to run a a 4th time.

the reason I asked is my first derby car I bolted the bumper on with 1/2" thread rod the bumper stayed on and didn't move was tough, next car welded the bumper on. welds snapped bumper came off end of that car, (welds probably wernt the best I know) next car I welded and bolted the bumper on and the bumper was a brick wall. also like what "STROM121" said "experience." youtube taught me how to weld, the more I do it the better it gets.

Instead if practicing on your bumper, weld everything else on the car. Go ahead and get your practice on stuff like the cag, suspension, door straps, etc. That way, when you get to the bumper, you don't have to worry.

I will do that, also, the rules around where i derby changed last month since all the old bumpers are getting scarce were allowed to use either a 4x4 1/4" thick square tubing or a 2x6 1/4" thick rectangular, which one would be better, and the best way to mount? not allowed to add any metal only for welding up the bumper to the shock up to the rad cradle
