Thanks again Ford Power 111. It was a good read. The big reason why I am asking these questions is my 16 year old and 18 year old boy are into derbying trucks. So we are building these trucks on a minimum wage or should I say Dad's fishing allowance. (low budget). This is our third year so we have learned you not only have to have a tough truck with good welds and good cages, but also plenty of horse power. So that is why I am asking if the air gap edlebrock intake manifold would help the 365 horse lincoln motor come alive in the arena. As you all know Utah is known for some bad ass truck derby's. So we are hoping that this is our year. One other thing I picked the air gap hoping that the engine would run cooler cause I have heard if the fuel is cool I will get better performance. I am also running 110 octane. Thanks again. P.S. I scored another 71 lincoln car out of I daho for 500 dollars. Scrapped the car for 300 so basically got the motor for 200 bucks.

I am kind of redneck so can you tell me what E85 or Alky is? My favorite saying to put on these trucks is "Just another POS" Hopefully this year we can tie some bow knots, if you know what I mean. Do you run a big block Ford in your Derby car or truck?

ive run a 460 from a 71 linc for 5 years now. run it in all my suicides and 70's fomoco. the best carb ive found is the autolite 4100 off of a mid 60's galaxie. its simple and it works. like the others said, heat is not the problem, these things love to run hot!

i run a 67 lincoln with a bbf 460 and 4barrel holley carb. we have always kept mine cool by using the heater core lines and running them inside the car into a cooler with ice and a tranny cooler with it. its pretty much the same thing you do to run your tranner cooler lines but for the block you use the heater core lines and its the same concept.

You are not running a chevy 350 here guys. A 650 is entirely too small. With that carb on it im suprised it isnt running lean and getting hot. If you would bolt an 850 holley dp on there it would run correctly and from my experience cooler.
The biggest problem with a bbf is they are not zero decked and leads to fuel ping and broken pistons. The high octane fuel kinda does away with this problem. Especially in the older bbf with the dove, c9, c8 head because of there smaller cc and higher compression.

^^^ actually that's not how carburetors work; try a search on "volumetric efficiency" if you want to understand it better. It is completely possible that a 650 CFM (or even smaller) carb can be tuned razor sharp on a 460 engine in the typical RPM's for a derby application. If it is running lean it's a matter of making jetting changes, not bolting on bigger airflow carbs.

I noticed there isn't much on here about the 390's. I have one in my 58 merc wagon that runs like a raped ape but im not too sure on it yet as it hasn't been ran in a derby yet. how do they handle the heat? how are people mounting them without using those stupid rubber mounts that are pretty much glued on the block? and should I just swap it out for my tried and true 318 and be done with it? I really don't want to waste this wagon with a sh1t motor because it will be running against a lot of imps and other tough old iron and has to move quick. I have a nine inch with 4:11 gear ratio if that makes any difference between the two motors

I used one for about four years. I thought it was great. I don't ever remember it getting to hot, but it was back in the early 80's. I had put a Eldenblock(sp) and 4bbl on it while it was still in my 62 pickup/daily driver. Someone before me, had put the 390 in it. I took the stock mounts, drilled thru them, and bolted them together. Never had one break. Hope that helps a bit.

If it was me I would stick with the 318. I won more with a 318 than I ever did a ford and I am a ford guy.
