Does it have swivel bumper shocks? Sounds like a 73 to me...

I tossed the shocks years ago. I'm fairly certain it was a 75 or a 76.

How are the 72 impala bumpers? do you have to do alot to them to make them strong at all, or do they hold up decent at least?

A general rule of thumb is to look for 74+ bumpers, as that is the year that the government mandated the bumpers to be able to withstand a slow impact without damaging the car. There are a few exceptions like the olds railroad bumper, but almost all of the 73 and before are just a shell.

Is this bumper still better than the aluminum backed bumper i had on my 77 olds wagon, at least? If so, i can work with that. otherwise I will just take the 77 olds bumer and put it on my impala. I know this sounds stupid, and I know that it is, but I am VERY limited to parts and money. Im doing it for fun, but want to build my cars the best I can with my limited amount of money I have to use as well.

It's cheaper than another car after a one and done with a bad bumper. Look for a cheap preran.

Just get a box ford front bumper. Cheap. Everywhere. Better than a pre74 or an aluminum back bumper

x2, I would hit up a junkyard and look for a cheap, full backed bumper...or at least a preran(hell a steel vic bumper wouldnt be that bad over your options).
Think of it this way, if you can keep your bumper ON and the bumper is hard enough to stay straight, it mostly keeps your frame uniform(instead of bending all crazy) and helps stop the core support/rad from pushing into your block and freezing your pullies.

The 72 doesn't really have a bumper per say, just a chrome skin.
Like everyone said, any steel backed bumper will be MUCH better.
As for the aluminum bumper or the 72 bumper... Ehh, if I had to pick, I guess I would take the aluminum and somehow bolt it through the skin, alum back, and attach it to the frame however your rules will allow... Although still not a good choice.

I had a few people tell me the bumper on a 75 malibu wagon is fine how it is, and had a few people tell me to flip it. I know this is a "mid size" question, but wanted to ask it on this thread as well. What do most of you guys think I should do?
