I picked up a 1976 LTD for a stock show. I've only ran small cars but wanted to run a 2 man car with a buddy in fairly stock show this year. I watched a few videos and read through the threads on welding the spider gears to make it posi. I pulled the case and welded the gears according to the videos I watched. When I rotated the driveshaft, the other side of the gears had an enclosed case with a small square opening around them. Should I have pulled it apart instead to weld them or will welding one side work if it only needs to run one show? I was told to weld one side, rotate it, and then weld the other side. Welding the other side proved to be easier said than done with no room to get at the gears to weld them. I may have screwed the whole thing up but wanted to take a stab at it before reaching out and asking for advice online. I know it seems very basic but it's something that is completely new to me. I'm not sure what rearend I have but have pictures. WeCrash said the forum has exceeded the size for uploads. Any advice/input is appreciated. Thanks.

woodburyrock I'm assuming if had a diff cover and you didn't have to pull the center section out of the front, and if so that's a what I believe is called a 8.7. How are you trying to upload pics? If you can still rotate the pinion and both tires turn, then I doubt you have ruined the axle for use, just possibly ruined to be able to take it apart to repair if something broke, but that really doesn't matter because there are almost no aftermarket parts for that axle.

I included a picture in the link below. I can still rotate everything and both tires turn. One side was wide open where you can see all of the gears but the other side was mostly enclosed preventing me from being able to weld on the other side. Question is, will the gears from only one side hold up for a derby? The picture below is the side that is enclosed after I welded the other side and rotated it. Thank you for the help. ibb.co/fptbnxM

Probably work fine, is it right no. Did you have to remove center or no thays the most important part. That 8.7 is useless itll brake with one tiny hit
Edit, yup junk axle

I used some kit, probably got it from jegs?, yrs ago in a circle track car in class we had to run stock rearends. Didnt break axles after that but they leaked like crazy, my brakes were always messed up lol. I doubt theyd hold up but idk.

Thanks for the response. I think I've decided against that idea. I wouldn't care that much if they leaked but being aluminum scares me. If anything I would just go with weld on ends. With that I'm just concerned with getting them square.
