Are the 81's the ones with the variable venturi carbs? The one my cousin ran with that carb ran better than any other 302 I have seen. Can't remember if it was an 80 or an 81. I believe it was 79 and 80 that had v v carbs,,, another carb to stay away from for derby,,

What's the problems with those carbs? Maybe we got lucky but that one ran great.

Since you all like pics here you go. A plasma, a little time, a longer throttle cable, and your driving. And since its running might as well ad on some stacks. This was a buddy that did this. Note he had to put the carb on backwards so the throttle linkages would not get in a bind. That is your Redneck lesson for the day.

A SBF HEI distributor off ebay is about $40 delivered. A SBF 2 barrel or 4 barrel intake is about $30 - $50 and aluminum works just fine also. 2 barrel or 4 barrel carb is $50 to $100 after the rebuild kit. Holley 4 barrel works fine on an aluminum 4 barrel intake ive ran them for 10 years and won plenty of derbies with them.

you will need a longer throttle cable off of a carbed ford engine, itll be about another 2 inches? longer. make sure you get the intake mount with it so it lines it up right so it wont pop off and you should be good you should be able to grab one at a local junkyard

I'm working on a 83 vic right now and I put a motorcraft 2150 on it and the throttle cable seems to fit perfect? Am I missing something or just get lucky

Not that I know of. I've used the same carb on a 83, two 84's and a 85. Stock cable worked with them all.
