Yeah just find an 80s Fomoco and you'll have a much more pleasurable build and a happier time at the derby. I've seen too many new guys get a bad car to build and get trashed in the first 90 seconds of even a small show and end up getting a bad taste and never wanting to run again.

Have any of you looked at a 72 ltd? Doubtful a 72 ltd is the same frame design as a 73-78 just c channel for the last 2 or so feet in the trunk. I had decent luck with one as my first derby car won some money with the thing ran it 4 times. Get a 9 inch, hard nose a bumper on it, rebolt the front clip because the little u shaped nuts are no good and the threaded insert in the core support rip out, get/build a shifter, put ujoint steering column in, chain motor mounts and make it run as good as you can

^I didnt know the fronts were the exact same. I looked one over real hard at a yard that had one jacked up and no front clip on it and noticed it looked similar to the newer ones. With as quirky as the 73-8 Fords can be, I wouldnt want my first build to be quirky car with an even weirder rear frame. On the same piece of advice if a rookie asked about running a 72 caddy as a first build, I'd still recommend to learn with something else and not as finicky.

I've said this before.... 65-72s shouldn't even be in the same build thread.
The 69-72s are the same front frame as a 73-78s. The rear frame is basically like a 71-73 GM, channel after the humps.
Now the 65-68s... just pass on those.

Just build it an learn for there. Rare for a rookie to win first show but does happen. Almost all rookies never drive with rearend either. Yes have the same fronts an 73 to 78. I wouldn't even use the rear on 73 to 78 there's no need the fronts can handle it. Yes the fronts can go down but I've put a 80s ford front frame to ground in stock class. It's all about how you build it an the height an bumper angles. Good start to a decent car is hard nose an 9inch rearend.

Do the best I can on the build and see how it goes l. My friends are going help out the most they can when they arnt building their own cars. Going keep the 351 in it and what ever rear end under it. Just tlgoing to try and build it decent.

Read through all of these pages and it seems like the 65-72 range should be separated into two groups; 65-68 and 69-72. Focusing on the 69-72 models, how would they compare with pre-71 GMs? I'm not familiar with Fords at all, so I'm trying to gauge the potential build I have available in a 71 Galaxie. It's a pretty stock set of rules in terms of frame work, but we can weld bumpers, swap M/T and rear ends, etc. Thanks!

Can you shorten the frame rails down? I'd run it if it's what a guy has but shortening the front down some is a must in my opinion

I'm leaning towards yes on that. How much would you shorten it? And above all, would you even put the time into these cars, or am I much better off just running 79-02 Vics/Mercs?

I've ran em up against 97 downs and came out on top. I also shorten to the crossmember
Tough but not as predictable

Anyone have any tips for a 69 LTD? Either for chain and bang or lower stock class?

Ok I've got a 1972 Lincoln Mark IV. I'm wanting to run it in a class where you can leaf it and tilt the front end. Does anyone know where the real bad weak spots are to address? Are they comparable to the later Mark 4's and 5's? I'm fairly new to these 70s fords, the frames look good except for the c channel in the rear, and in front of the a arms. I know fords have a bad reputation for bad trunks, but I'm hoping to remedy that by leafing it.
