Is there a benefit to running a radiator mounted electric fan instead of a regular fan on your water pump? Is there draw backs to doing it?

Is there a benefit to running a radiator mounted electric fan instead of a regular fan on your water pump? Is there draw backs to doing it? Mechanical fan does not use any battery/alternator power or require any wiring, toggle switches, etc. They do need a homemade shroud to operate efficiently. A mechanical fan will blow air across the motor but not necessarily pull air through the radiator without a shroud. Electric fans will move with the radiator, they cool very efficiently, and some have a built in shroud. Its all personal preference. I have ran plenty of both types of setups and to me it just depends on the type of car and build I am working on. It has allot to do with how far the motor is from the radiator and whether or not you are running an alternator or multiple batteries. As usual, this is just my opinion.

for those interested, this is the best fan assembly money can buy right now for a derby sized radiator. draws 28 amps and package very well. i run this fan and shroud but i use a motor off of another fan assembly and i rewind it due to the extra space inside of it and it takes 44 amps with nominal blockage. you can even buy them with a switch and relay kit. very good stuff... www.spalusa.com/store/main.aspx?p=itemdetail&item=30102082

...as long as it has some type of pressure relief. every cooling system has a pressure release!

Anyone have pics of homemade shrouds? I run plastic fans and never ran a shroud, would like to see some pics of these!

what is the benefit of fabric softener in the cooling system? The fabric softener breaks surface tension allowing the heat to transfer better into and out of the water. On anothe note dish soap does the same thing.
