I'm a ford guy forced into using mopar power in mopar cars ( damn rules) I decided to be a little different a play with injection. First question... best trans for these ( im likely getting a 2wd 98 ram 318) will the stock trans handle much abuse?
I know about heads cracking and am looking into aftermarkets , ill be running it in shockers and y frame basically stock rules with a geared 8.75 ( 4.56 looks to be as high as i can go)
Any thoughts?

get a 727 behind it. you wont have any problems with it, filters are dirt cheap so change it and keep the fluid topped off good.

You can go deeper than 4.56's in an 8 3/4. Not sure if you are meaning "can't" as in engine build/track size, or "can't" as in you can't find deeper gears. I run 5.13's in my 8 3/4. I think the gears are from Richmond Gear.

I've been looking into building a magnum motor myself. I'd rather start with a 360 but I'm having a tough time locating a decent one for decent money. What are the have to's with these? Mine will be carbed as I don't want to dick with fuel injection.

If u were close to ny I got a 360 magnum motor I'd get rid of pretty cheap For the build of the motor I'd got on eBay find a high rise air gap intake that will bolt to a la block or magnum block

The boys on the dodge forum are pretty helpful basically for demo purposes a 727 will bolt up just have to drill out a spot for crank position sensor otherwise just watch for the heads cracking ( I'm looking into aftermarket iron heads) and mine will stay injected just to be a little different.

maybe I'm just old school, but I'd just build a regular 67' and up LA chrysler smallblock.Yes some of the newer magnum style smallblock mopar cylinder heads flow good, but some of the older casting number cylinder heads do also.and you can buy aftermarket cast iron cylinder heads also if the factory isn't good enuff for you.
Same as camshafts, you can get roller camshafts made for the non magnum engines as well.IMO the new magnum mopar smallblocks just are not worth all the hype and money when the pre magnum stuff will do just as good as building horsepower, torque and being reliable.

I agree with hemi1. The old blocks were tough with a steel crank. We put together a 66 with a roller set up. The issue we ran into was the pushrods length and geometry. Got it together and it screams.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't the motor mounts on a magnum block resemble a small block Chevy, thus getting rid of the ears?
