Hub flange to hub flange will help you more than the measurement from the backing plate. Measure the hubs and a stock rear for a vic and see what you come up with, It will probably still be a little wide, No big deal just backspace the rims accordingly.

Gm 14 bolt in a 2000 crown vic. You'll want to get some weld in centers to make rims. If not, they'll stick out to far.

I've been useing Sterling 10.25. They have bigger axles and usually have lower gears.

What are the chances of someone breaking one? You do have a point. However from what i have seen the full floats have better/bigger gear sets from the factory. And the c-clip axles would get broken around here. Its not the spline count you need to worry about, they will snap off at the clip location.
