You can balance shafts yourself but I won't even get into that. Most of the problems come when the u-joints are out of phase or crooked to begin with. Make the cuts square and make a jig to keep the joints aligned properly. A u-joint speeds up and slows down with every revolution so keep that In mind.

Square sliders will twist over time. Especially with gears, a non stock motor, and a relatively dry track. Slamming gears or standing on the brake pedal with a pinion brake and they start to twist.

I have built lots of stock shafts with no issues. As for balancing a quart of tranny fluid will do a lot, but it doesnt work on sliders. Then you can use a couple of hose clamps or even electrical tape to balance the shaft.

^^^ Its easier to add metal to a shaft to balance ( welding ). If you can jig one up with bearings and a fixture to spin it ( by hand ) you can balance a shaft, Like a tire. For what I do it works for my stuff. Hose clamps work ok on the road if you spit a weight, Temporarily. A simple bathroom scale, A slider with yokes, And a stock shaft with yokes, And its easy to see where the carnage comes from. None of this is pointed at you just ranting ;D

I've built several slider shafts, I go to rural king when they have the 10% off bucket sale and purchase all the parts.. I have just a bit over $200 in them, I've built mine and for several friends for free of coarse. I have a lathe, Bridgeport, key point is to turn down yr ends after welding them together to make sure they are square.

I have a tractor supply here in town. Going there after work today to look at PTO shafts vs starting from scratch with square tubing. I really appreciate all the good tips and keep them coming.

The only bad thing bout the pto shafts is that the ends an u joints aint big enough but nerat has the ends and yoke you will need you can buy the square shafts with the 35 series yokes at any tsc store along with the ujoints, you will need to get the neret ends to weld on though, when you get the prices on everything you can you please post on here to let everyone know the total without the labor, the price on mine doesn't mean they are made cheap, I have been working at an implement dealer for 13+ years and we are a direct dealer which allows me to sell at the price I do, I personally don't like square shaft sliders, seems like everyone that has twisted or broke a tranny up here is a square shaft, my tri-oval yokes are machined to accept the shafts as close to center as possible, balanced no but have 70+ shafts out so far and not one complaint, just thought I'd put my 2 cents in, not trying to start a war with anyone, thanks for your time ;D

the problem youre going to run into with that setup isnt the slide part. It will be the front U joint binding from the angle once your car noses..... you can grind it to help some but still isnt going to go too much further up before it breaks that U joint Here mine im working on for my car all i have to do is get a couple u joints this piece slides in after i drill and tap my tranny bolt on then im useing c clips to install u joint Sent from my PC36100 using proboards
