Honestly if the rear frame is in bad shape and your rules allow it, try a a rear frame swap from a vic. I did one last year on a suicide amd it was npt bad at all. Was able to weld humps to body/frame seam shorten up and mopar rear bumper and car is stupid hard. Granted runs at full weld shows but swap isnt bad and well worth the build. Can save a rotted car that way and just wanted to throw that out to those that have shows near them that may allow such swaps. Hell if you can put other cradles in 03+ vics ,k-members as well, some may wanna try this as well.

THEN IM PISSED AND DISCOURAGED... save yourself the headache..JMO keep looking ;D I am wondering what to do with the coil suspension in my bird up front what is the best way to set it up to keep the wheels on this baby On page 1, I posted a after shot of my 64. Don't know if you can see it. If not, click on the image box. Don't know how to post pictures on here now, after the change. Steve What all did you do to the rear, or wasit stock? Only thing I did to the rear was weld the lid, and pre-bend. I think I should have pre-bent more towards the middle. The front I kept pretty clean. If I can find a shot of the front, I'll try and find a way to post it.

Get rid of the goofy stock rear leaf hangers and find a way to relocate the rear of the springs in line with the frame. Add as many leafs as allowed and chain the humps tight. This should significantly strengthen the rears of these cars, they blow apart quickly with the stock setup because the leafs add no strength to the rear. Fix that, set it up like a 60's Mopar in the rear and you should be pleasantly surprised.

need some info, looking into buying a 1960 square bird, would be a first time thunderbird build, mostley run mid 70 gm's, from reading I have done, I would be able to fix the front frame where it dips, and fix up the rear springs, add one leaf and will have a 350. any pics of the 60 birds and tips/ info weather or not to buy would be nice! thanks

Found a SUPER clean 64 bird at a junk yard today. Owner is selling it by the pound (whatever it weighs across the scale times his price per pound) he is allowing me to strip thecar of any parts I dont want or need at the yard to lower the weight and thus the price. My question is, besides regular interior motor and trans etc what all can be gotten rid of since its useless. Front suspension, rearend, bumpers etc? Anything else?

I'd say all the window tracks and panels. Those rear side ones have some weight to them and none of those panels add rigidity to the car. Or if you don't like the leaf packs toss em and build your own (that is if you can torch them there) based on the set up I see under mine they will come out and be semi-relocated anyways.

Thanks. I mean it seems simple to do, but I just wanted to get an idea of what all to take with me out there. I'm assuming from reading so far, the suspension is garbage.

Not so much garbage as inadequately placed, there are gray areas to play with mounting the brackets for the rear leafs. It just makes more sense to build a leaf pack to fit the new design than run stock, so eliminating those will reduce your cost to buy, just take into account at some point you will need to build a set unless you have a nice spare parts pile.

Do you guys recomend short leafing these cars? Notch and tuck? Leave straight and canoe? I am just curious, been brain storming lately and been reading this thread alot. I aquired 2 64s and plan on building them for the 2015 season.

I've reinforced the factory tie rods by welding rebar from end to end. Had to drop the center link to clear the oil pan on my engine. Upper and lower ball joints will be replaced with screw in style racing ball joints and I will be welding the upper a arms to the frame. This is all I'm allowed to do per my rules. I'm leaving the springs and struts in, if anything they'll help brace the inner fender/shock tower area.
