OK Ole Skool builders I got questions from me talking with a old skool builder. He ran larger main bearing sizes in his motors for the shallowing so when it got hot it wasn't tight. Any of you all do this so I can get a half as ratio of how you figured out what size to run after your crank had got turned. I'm just curious not sure when I'll try it. That's just one of the few tricks he told me I was curious if others ever did it or something like it for me to pick your brain more.

I could see having some extra turned off but now your almost to custom bearings unless your running like a .001/.002 in a fresh crank or just have your machinist cut a lil extra off...I think running the right oil for the right clearance is the main focus... not running 50w on stock clearance spec

I agree the proper oil weight is where most guys mess up. Thicker is not always better. Especially on a fresh engine. The crank material also plays a role. If it’s cast you will get more expansion than a steel crank as well.

I see it being not economical to run std bearing sizes .010/020 and having the crank clearance to your "ideal size" or hopefully getting a factory .002 or .001 crank and run a std bearing.... if that's your sizingq

Didn't know if others did it that's why I asked. When the Ole skool builders tell me their old tricks I always want to see what others think too if it's not to farfetch

Yes absolutely loosen up the clearances. We are getting everything hotter than anything stock...however most of the heat is on the piston/rings yes the bottom ends getting hot too but by that time your cam bearings on a cheaper motor are already runny

What kind of oil coolers have you all had good results from? If your gonna run one, I think Mike Koch with Koch Transmission Coolers or Ryan Ostrander with Catskill fab make the nicest ones with an enclosure. Both can be found on FB and both are great guys to work with.
