Looking to put together a 305 for a few stock heats in some county Fair shows. 20-25 min heats typically. Not concerned with making power. Only looking to have a clean running motor at doesn't shit off. I'm thinking pull it down. Reseal it, hone the cylinders, timing chain, oil pump, 1104 cam, Holly carb. I'd like to have the heads touched a bit. Should I just have them cleaned up? Different valves? Certain heads to look for? Looking for any input in this department. Thanks

I was in a rollover this past weekend. There’s mud and dirt packed into headers. Plus there was a fire so extinguisher powder all over. Some dirt made it to the valves. What should I do pull the heads? Or slap other headers on it? It’s not a high dollar engine but there is a little money in it. Also what works to get the powder off?
On the early small blocks what are you using to block off the oil fill and breather holes? The one in the intake a s the one in the back if the block. I 2ant to use newer style valve covers and plug these 2 holes off
Does anyone have experience with 059 heads? I got this engine complete with bottom end issues, with plans of putting the heads on my 350, I was told it was a 5.7 vortec i didn’t even question it because of the intake and throttle body. Tore the heads off started cleaning them up and check the casting number is 12558059, I did a little research and it turns out it is a 5.0 vortec. Just curious if anyone has tried these on a 350? 305 heads on a 350 will bump your Compression ratio up a bit, maybe with some porting these heads will perform nearly as well a set of 062s but with higher CR? Thanks!
Out of curiosity, has anybody tangled with a 5.3 vortec (LM7)? I have them readily available in my area for very cheap out of early 00’s gm pickups. I would like to do a carb conversion with a 6014 MSD ignition system if I were to go that route, just don’t see any talk of them. Pros and cons of a stock and/or mild builds is what I’m looking for. Just asking around because I’m fairly new to the derby world and don’t want to get myself into something that would be a complete waste of time. I do have an ‘86 305 and a ‘79 2 bolt main 350, just trying to test the waters on something a little different. Thanks in advance guys.
