Black Rock back on 2013 Schedule
DUNDEE, NY -- Smashed Empire Films will be returning to Black Rock Speedway in 2013.
For the first time since 2010, Waterloo, NY-based Smashed Empire Films will venture into the storied Black Rock Speedway, located on Main Street in Dundee, Yates County.
The crew will be on site twice; making a stop at their first round of carnage June 1, and then returning again for the fall event on November 2. The June date includes freestyle monster trucks, and the fall event will include an Motorhome Demolition Derby Invitational.
Black Rock owner Dean Hoag reached out to Smashed Empire Films about a month ago, and John King and King's Smash'em Crash'em Demolition Derbies is now hosting the two derbies, each dubbed 'Wreckapalooza.' Each card will include full size, 4- & 6-cylinder chain-up, and youth divisions.
"This is a great opportunity for the drivers in the area," said Chris Marquart, owner of Smashed Empire Films. "It's a good move for John and the King's Smash'em Crash'em crew, too. They get to branch out a little, and this helps anchor down a couple dates the drivers in our home region really look forward to."
King's Smash'em Crash'em Derbies (Edmeston, Madison County, NY) oversees three other derbies in the year, two of which Smashed Empire Films regularly covers. In addition to their hometown events the second week of July at the Madison County Fair in Brookfield, NY, King's Smash'em Crash'em will host a show August 20 at Fulton Speedway in Fulton, NY and will also direct the action at the Brookfield Wheel Days Sept. 28 at the Madison County Fairgrounds.
One of the interesting things with the King's Smash'em Crash'em shows: Imperials are welcome.
"It's no secret, we love Brookfield Wheel Days, and the Imperial group always puts on an incredible show," Marquart said. "I hope the guys who support John and his crew at Wheel Days are willing to come up and see what Black Rock is all about. It would be nice for some of our buddies in Dunkirk to bring their full-framers down, too. It'd be an East-meets-West kind of thing.
"And of course, for us, for Smashed Empire Films, I'm just as excited. These are dates that drivers have inquired about the last several years. With John overseeing the derby part of the card, it threw open the door for us to have a little more active role in promoting the show and of course, documenting it on film."
New Hampshire-based Smashed Empire Films staffer Steve Bucknam will be on site June 1 with one ground and one in-car camera; the full arsenal and a more complete staff will be on site in November.
Drivers attending both derbies will be entered in a drawing to participate in the 'World's Largest Motorhome Derby;' of the drivers attending each, 10 names will be pulled and those drivers given an opportunity to demolish motorhomes in a rare version of elimination motorsports.
Rules are due out soon; there are no planned changes in the rule book which is uniformally applied to all King's Smash'em Crash'em events. A link will be posted when rules are finalized.
