What are your thoughts on running an ls1 or a high mileage 5.3? Does anyone know of any issues with running them with the stock computer inside the derby? I have an ls1 that came out of a camaro that I have in a truck. But lost interest in that project. I can get a high mileage 5.3 with everything that came out of a rolled truck.

Good call on the bolts being pulled out. I would of never thought about that until it happened.

Is there a certain number head that is better for derby applications?

I've seen some people prefer the iron 317 6.0 heads but for the most part they're the same. The later 243 5.3 casting has good runners and small chamber and gets you out of the crack prone castec heads

anyone point me in the right direction on a custom timing table to run on msd 6014? or does everyone just use the preset timing tables? running a 6.0 with a sloppy stage 2 cam and a 750 dp

What’s the pros and cons on the engine how good is the 4.8 compared to the 6.0. 6.0 5.3 4.8 4.8 and 5.3 makes pretty similair power, 4.8 compensates with flat tops due to its smaller size. 4.8 has a smaller stroke but same bore as a 5.3. 5.3 has same stroke as a 6.0, but 6.0 has a bigger bore. Really what you gain is more torque with a 5.3 over a 4.8, and 6.0 will make more of both. Plenty of people have run each, I usually go for the cheapest option personally. Am not going to spend hundreds more for a 6.0, wouldn't cry if I paid for a 5.3 and got a 4.8

What’s the pros and cons on the engine how good is the 4.8 compared to the 6.0. 6.0 5.3 4.8 6.0 and 5.3 wont rev past about 6.5 grand because of their long stroke, I did the math and the piston speed was to high, but have lotsa torque because of said long stroke. 4.8 will rev but doesnt have torque. (I did the math for a hypothetical 8000 rpm screamer made out of only stock ls parts that was a 328 cid ,4.8 crank in a 6.0 block and it should have a little more torque due to displacement.) I would chose a 5.3 just because of their aviliability and if it has an ally block- SELL IT. 6.0 is too rare-ish in my area so I prolly would use it in a street car before destroyin it in a derby car

I've been told 5.3 is the best one to go with bur never looked in it my self yet. Not ready to get into LS builds yet but thinking of soon.
