Out of curiosity, has anybody tangled with a 5.3 vortec (LM7)? I have them readily available in my area for very cheap out of early 00’s gm pickups. I would like to do a carb conversion with a 6014 MSD ignition system if I were to go that route, just don’t see any talk of them. Pros and cons of a stock and/or mild builds is what I’m looking for. Just asking around because I’m fairly new to the derby world and don’t want to get myself into something that would be a complete waste of time. I do have an ‘86 305 and a ‘79 2 bolt main 350, just trying to test the waters on something a little different. Thanks in advance guys.

I would run an ls bone stock, grab a spare and run it. They're cheap horsepower that way but you wont beat the run time on a small block once you start putting time and money in them. Dollar for dollar stock is cheap but once you start building SBC takes the lead.
Matching that with cradle setups, ps setups and I personally prefer the simplicity. Seems like the ls had some issues at the last show I was at (bakken beatdown where tried and true small blocks were running no problems

I got a 5.3 Vortec and am looking for a trans. Found some 4l60e’s and there is no bolt hole on the top of the bell housing. Will the trans still work since the bolt hole is blank on passage side?

So would a ‘95 4l60e work for a ‘00 5.3?

I wouldn't run a 4l60e in derby.

A 400 turbo is the heavy duty tranny proven to take what we put them through next step under id say 375 and 350 turbos. I got a 4l60e in both our silverados and they junk on street so putting heat on one just sounds like I'd be replacing it left and right.

I run a 2002 5.3 and an 03 5.3 with fuel injection both. One is drive by cable and the other is drive by wire. Make sure to fuse a few of the power to the sensors, relay to the fuel pump, change valve springs, and have somebody tune it to allow 6900 r's also adjust how long it take before the ECM will allow for additional fuel to be added when the throttle is mashed to the floor, I think the stock tune requires the throttle to be 90% open for 60 seconds before it will add extra fuel to make it not run lean, which almost all will be. Delete the wires needed according to lt1swap.com or don't and just get rid of what you don't need and wire power to the required lines according to lt1swap.com. I personally love the fuel injection, both of my motors run extremely well, and now i'm starting to play with decapping injectors and running e-85 after I build my injector test setup to determine the actual flow rate and get a close matched set. what do you have to do to tune it to 6900?

What are the benefits of a manual or electric choke carb?
