I dont remember the size but ive used a washer before and just welded the hole shut and self tappered it in. The bigger fender washer ones that are thin are easy to get the self taper through. That’s what I had planned, lol, fender washers with the little hole to weld up

After a few nights of reading all 106 pages I pulled my first ls into the garage the other night to start getting it ready and right away noticed the upper passenger side bellhousing bolt hole is just a solid blank. Are they all this way? And has anyone figured out a way to tell the difference between a 5.3 or a 4.8 without tearing the heads off?

That whole is blank because of a water passage just beyond it...in many of the 5.3s I’ve had,on the back of the block where it says 4.8/5.3,mine have been underlined with a yellow marker...if not,use a scope in the spark plug hole to identify if it’s flat top pistons,or slightly dished pistons...you won’t recognize the difference between the 2 on the track

Depending on the year, the newer 07-^,some of the 5.3s had flat top pistons...but a big majority of the earlier 99-06 5.3s had a dish type piston...this is just based off the motors I have encountered,I’m by no means an LS expert...just what I’ve seen so far

Can measure the throw of the crank through a spark plug hole, same way they measure a 360/390

Going by the pistons its a 4.8. Put a scope down in and its a flat top and came out of a early 2000's pickup. Doesn't really matter i guess. I'm just gonna try it out and if i like it i can always take the next one a step farther.

U won’t be able to tell, they are awesome motors 4.8,5.3.or 6.0...I’d run a 4.8 anyday of the week..cheap easy power..in the process of buyin my own carb swap kit and ign box right now,I borrowed one in September to run a show

Curious on these motors stock would the head lift after it gets hot with out arp studs. The torque to yield bolts just don't seem like something to keep on a motor that will continue to get hot an cold. Seems like just asking for bad head gaskets with out arp rods.
