I have never rebuilt a bottom end on a mopar engine, have done valve jobs, swapped intakes and cams, carbs, etc. A stock bottom end on a 318 or 360 is pretty tough, and when they do finally give up, I'll just find another. That being said, only thing rebuilding the bottom end would do is give me more compression, and that is not a good recipe for a derby engine in my opinion. This is a stock bottom end after 3 hard runs on a built 360. now its back to the builder for a forged crank and h-beam rods.

i haev a question for you guys, i have a 360/904 i have ran in 5 derbys heats and mains, its my favorit motor, it loves the heat and never shuts down, but the last 2 shows, my motor has been having issuses,in the show before this last one, its started sputtering and cutting out in my heat and i pulled my air cleaner off for the main and she ran like a champ again, well in this last show, i replaced everything, points, condensor, cap wires, plugs. a Huge air cleaner hoping it wouldn't choke its self out, well i ran about 9 minutes and she went to crap and i went back to fighting the motor to keep it running, this motor has ran 20-30 minute heat and mains with no problems, i was wondering if you guys have any idea of why this would start acting up all of a sudden? is it time for a rebuild? this was my favorit engine, maybe it was the whole sticking a mopar in a chevy that caused the engine to start acting up. i dont know, im kind of at a lose with it.

what about a fuel problem, like a flaky pump or vapor lock in the lines?

Ya fuel pump, or maby your Carb acting up? Pull your air cleaner off while it's running and make sure both sprayers are working.

had the same prob with mine, come to find out the rubber hose i was using for fule line was breaking down and clogging my fule pump. from then on i run all copper line from tank to pump with a filter b4 the pump. problem solved... got a ? for yall though, got a pretty beefy rebuilt 318 bock, 360 heads/intake. water jacket's have been shaved etc. done extensive reading and work on it. seams like it takes for ever to warm up. i halfta start it heat b4 mine and it still is cold after running a heat at an idle in the pits, running to track and getting in line. after abt half a heat it finaly warm's up and come's to life, never had a prob with it shutting down and runs really good after i bust a radiator etc. what would cause it to do this till it warms up? have a 904 with mopar 8 3/4 leafed rear in my 98 linc.

My guess would be that it is lean. If it just doesn't want to idle, crank on the idle mix screws a little (how you do that varies depending on what carb you have).

that's abt the only thing else i could do i suppose. like i said it run's fine after it's warmed up but getting it warm is the downfall... ran 3 derbies no prob shut it off, never died one time. last derby i ran i shoved my fan thrught my radiator, cut my fan and powersteering belts and still ran great till i shut it off, after feature she fired right back up and pulled out on the trailor. got hung up on a bumper thrught my back door on a dead car and couldnt get off it.

318 with 360 heads ? If I put the super thin head gaskit would it give me enough compression for a derby engine...

I don't think so. Correct me if I'm wrong but installed 360 heads on a 318 without decking the block/shaving the heads lowers the compression right?

correct. But from what I've been reading more compression means more heat, sooo If you ran a low enough rear end gear, would It make up for the small loss in power? Just a thought, thanks

You can look at it this way too.... Higher gear = more engine rpms which is more heat. After all sand baggers don't over heat.
