Ok so just bought a 318 la recently motor came complete only missing a few things such as rocker assembly and pushrods. The guy I bought it from had all the receipts and paper work to new bottom end bearings crank, rods etc. came with a 268h comp cam and it’s original cam card the only downside is that all the papers and parts dates back about 25 years. Claimed he only put about 50 miles on the motor and stored it ever since, he would lube the cam and rotate the motor ever couple months as well...I’m just wondering is this 268 too much cam for the 318? being I’m cheap was also wondering if I should replace any parts just figured I’d do new gaskets clean the motor out some any input is appreciated

I have a sbm 318 that was in a garage fire at the end of December. Gonna try and get it going again this weekend. Plan on taking the heads and oil pan off to check everything and then sealing it back up and trying to spin it with a starter. Gonna let the cylinders soak in oil over night before it goes back together. Engine sat outside in the snow/rain for about a month. Anything else I should check before I try and fire it?

Fire and snow. Wow, that's hard on any engine. If you are that far apart, might as well just rebuild it. JMO

Thanks strom you the man!!! 😎 I posted that quite a long time ago now, I started inspecting bearings, cleaning light dirt debris and other various parts pulled the cam out, it all checked out to look ok. I bought the motor and trans for 150 bucks with scrap metal money off the guy lol...I really can’t complain if anything happens to it really...

must not have got too hot or the seals would all be melted, bearings delaminated, all kinds of carnage if the temp got hot enough. 318s are tough as nails though. The only way I have ever killed one is by getting water in it.

I have a 1986 318/904 and a 1976 360/727. I’ve heard the roller 318s are pretty good. Any advantage to either of the combos listed? I’m debating which combo to use this year.

I'd go 360/727 trans alone on that one

I think it is all about what you prefer. I have never had a issue with a 904 but the 727 is more bullet proof. I like the 318s more than the 360s though too. What kind of build is this going in?

360 heads on the 318 with the 727 and if your feeling motivated throw a comp 268h cam in and double roller timing chain is a must on both but that's my opinion

It would be going into a 86 Diplomat or 76 Coronet. The build would be pretty bone stock, swap bumpers and rear ends.

If you get the right one it will have swirl port heads.

Dumb question. Will a 4412 bolt right up to a 318 la 2bbl intake? No you need a adapter. but they are a great carb to use. They sell the adapter at most car parts stores. Got mine from orielys.
