Still attaching the door bars as you can see its being propped up by one of my window bare that still needs to be attached. Everything is gutted, spreader bars are in, windows are removed (except back hatch), but still a long way to go. Still need to swap the engine and mount gas tank and batt box and a bunch of wiring to be done. Might end up as next years car the way my schedule has been, but here's hoping that I can get it done for this year.

In the future I would recommend doing battery, fuel cell, wiring, ect. Before doors are shut. We normally take the doors off until about everything inside the car is done.

Well I'm still working on the door bars so they're not installed yet and I haven't welded the doors yet so I think I'll take your advice on the fuel cell and such before I seal it all up.

The lingo in your rules is way different than what I’m used to, so it’s a little hard to give advice. As you’ve seen if you ask specific questions myself and others should be able to help though. There aren’t many folks left that run rear wheel drive compacts, but those that do are usually very helpful to one another. Swapping the engine was not my preferred choice but my reason for doing it is that I can't find a tranny for the 2.3 that came with the car. My budget won't allow me to buy a new one so my only option was to swap. That s10 in the background of the pic has the engine and tranny that I'm going to swap in. I agree the rule lingo is confusing, but I have been talking with one of the car inspectors at the fair and he's helped to clarify what's allowed and what's not. You guys have been great help and I appreciate it.

How well built is your competition? Not meaning any disrespect but this car seems pretty underbuilt with those rules, not that rules allow you to build a mod car but you are allowed to do a lot more welding than it appears you are doing. I would take advantage of the seam welding allowed and I would ditch that bumper for a better bumper or the 3" square tubing. Also I would take advantage of your down bars/ cage.

A lot of the cars that that get entered at our fair I would consider underbuilt. I plan on doing seam welding, I believe the rules say something bout welding seams past a certain point but I'll need to look it up. I generally don't have much time these days to work on it just bits of time here and there. So what's wrong with the bumper and what bumper would you suggest replacing it with? Money is an issue as far as doing things like the 3" square tubing as a bumper.

I understand the time thing and that other cars may be under built, however there are certain things when I'm doing a build that I just can't not do. Putting the best bumper on possible is a number one for me. That bumper is usable but I would weld it straight to the front of the frame and compress your shocks and weld them to the side of your frame rails. That should hold things together a arms forward, especially if you weld the seams a arms forward. These cars have the potential to be very strong but if you don't take advantage of the rules a front wheel drive will ruin what would be a great car. I always built pintos and pacers like mini mopars and it worked out pretty damn good. Also does the car currently have a motor in it? or is that why you are putting in the v6? My favorite motor in these cars was always the 2.3.

mount your front bumper good like this just slide the bumper shocks back on the frame and bolt all the way through the frame with grade 8 bolts. leave it all the way out just weld it like this You want your bumper back against the frame or back as far as possible like so. The pad on the shocks always ripped off on me so I don't trust just having the bumper welded to the shock. I welded the bumper to the end of the frame and then welded the shocks on.

My favorite motor in these cars was always the 2.3. I intend to build the car good, I want to win not just participate in the sport and have fun while I'm doin it so I want build this car right. Even if that means building it for next year's derby. I will compress the bumper shocks and weld them to the frame like you said. Do you have any pics showing the seams I should weld? I'm not very familiar with this car even though we've had it for years. Everything I learned about it has been in the last couple of months. This car has a 2.3 that s not seized but no tranny. My Dad apparently tossed it out years ago for some reason and I have looked for used transmissions and had no luck. New ones are way out of my price range. So that being said I opted to swap the engine with 2.8 that has a tranny out of an 85 s10. not my first choice but it's what I've got to work with.

rules let ya run hump plates ? No hump plates. we're only allowed to chain them in one wrap, I think. For sure chain the body to rear end otherwise the humps will go upward away from the leafs.put the car on trailer and suck the back down with chain or racket strap then chain humps down .try to get the leafs straight as possible then clamp the leafs. Ran a few pinto's back in the day on asphalt and sure enough the humps/body spread apart big time.

Ok I will try that. the rules also say, One wrap of chain to secure the unibody to the subframe per frame rail. MUST be between fire wall and core support. I'm not entirely sure what they mean here.

That one won't apply to your car because it has no sub frame. It will be mostly for fwd's. The only rwd compact I can think of that has a sub frame AND a uni rail is the Pacer.
