Can anyone tell me the basic wiring I'm going to need for a 78 Chevette. Factory 1.6 motor and carb. I would like to use only the dist, coil, starter and battery. There are 4 wiring coming from my Dist. Does anyone know which ones I need and don't need?

Sure. Chevette wiring is about as basic as it gets. There should be 4 wires on your coil...a 2 wire harness that runs to the distributor (you need that). Of the other 2, I don't remember which, but you only need 1 (trial & error)...run power to it.
Starter is just like a full size GM starter...push button to the small terminal
If you want to use the alternator, just splice all 3 wires together & run power to them.
Everything else gets ripped out.

^^^That's true for Chevette's entire production run.

These are unibody cars correct? Yes. Helpful shopping tip: If a car is newer than about 1955 and has a wheelbase shorter than 108", unibody is a pretty safe bet.

Personally if it was me, I'd throw that rearend away and put in a 7.5-8.8 mustang rearend.

We never had a trail arm break, but have bent them. If keeping the stock rear, I'd be more concerned about eliminating that aluminum driveshaft housing.

I got a carb kit at autozone, also throw in a new timing belt ,scrap the air pump and p/s pump. and put a lighter spring/weight kit in the dist. and yes it can be wired like a regular gm.
