thanks smashbob.. what exactly does the spring kit do? I've used the chevy v-6/v-8 kit, it brings in the centrifugal advance sooner.

Anyone have any other pics of ways to conserve the cast iron casing? It always seems to break on me.

On the last one, after busting a couple housings, we just swapped rears. Hoping this year we will come up with a shaft that eliminates the housing.

Hi, I'm new to demo ,but I'm looking at starting off 2015 with compact cars they seem to be a good class to start with due to lack of entries up here in pine city MN and grantsburg WI. Looking for tips and such to build off of. Trying to gain knowledge in this class. I already have an idea of a car to buy. Probably going to get a chevette I between 76 and 80. If there any helpful tips or anything to help me that any could give me, it would be greatly appreciated. I already read this whole section. Is there anything more to know

Biggest weaknesses: Motor mounts, tie rod ends, back goes down without help, back not friendly for 14" tires, 4 speeds have shifter issues, aluminum driveshaft housing.
If you can take care of those things, they are pretty simple and solid cars for smaller wheelbase shows. The more stock the rules and the smaller the size rules, the more these stand out as decent cars.

It says we are allowed to run only 13 and 14 inch. We can't notch or pre bend the frame at all and can't use any support besides what the rules allow us to keep the hatch closed. What would be the best way to support the rear under these conditions?

Use 13's. What do they allow for hatch sealing? Use the nose on the first derby, then bend the back after it's been run once.

Secures in no more than 4 places by using either chains or rods or combination of chains and rods. If chains are used, they are only to be wrapped around once. Rods may be no larger than 3/4 and only 2 rods may go through to the frame, the other can go to the body only. Plates or washers may be no larger that 4" by 4". Threaded rods may be secured to the frame of the vehicle by bolting or welding. No more than 4" of the rod may be welded to the frame. All trunks must be open before inspection. Trunks that don't open must be able to be seen from back seat area. Quoted straight from the rules.

Any tips on wiring up a 1.8 in a chevette? I think it's a 85'. Wondering what wire I need to send power to and which one to ground on the coil.

I just bout a 86 chevette this weekend, and the guy said the shifter already broke on it(it's a 4 speed) and he said he put a new bolt in it, anybody know how to fix this, it broke today, and can't even get the car in gear. This is my first year running and first build and my first run will be in late July, hoping to figure this out before then, so I can run. I've read this whole thread and got a bunch of tips and have learned the biggest things and pros and cons of them. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

On the 4 speeds if the shifter is working but its not going into gear pull the tail shaft housing and check the output shaft snap ring. I got a preran 85 Chevette and that is what busted on it. The gear on lower left is the output gear

Shifter issues because Chevy thought it would be a good idea to push down and go into 1st to have reverse...stupid GM lol

I've never worked on it before and honestly I can't read any of the labels on the car. That may be why I couldn't find anything on Google lol. Thanks c4
