Does anyone have the pics from page 2 that Tude posted of the different vic bumpers? I'm trying to find pics of the gussets bumpers or the way to identify them so I pull the correct ones at the scrap yard.

My way to tell the gusset bumpers from the non gussets is there is a hole basically dead center in the backing and you can put your finger in there and feel the gusset. Obviously if you don’t feel it then it doesn’t have it. I read his post and didn’t realiZe there may have been a method to the madness of holding the bumpers on with bolts vs nuts and studs. I have had both and don’t remember which had gussets and which didn’t. He also says certain ones are 6” narrower and It is the 80s town cars bumpers that are narrower but I don’t know if that’s dependent on whether they have gussets or not. I’m pretty sure all the ones with the vent holes 79-80 have gussets. Also any 88+ bumper I have ran across has an aluminum backing.

Does anyone know what years/model the really heavy(it feels like almost twice the weight of a standard vic front), gusseted rear bumpers are off of? I bought a bundle of 80s fronts/rears a few years ago and it has held up really well. If i remember correctly, it had short ears before cutting them off.

Is it just the Vics that have gusset bumpers, or can the Lincolns and Mercs have them as well?

I think they all are possibly gusseted in the early 80s. Federal standards went from bumpers must being able to withstand a wreck with no visible damage at 5 mph, to only 2.5 mph in 1982, if memory serves me right. I believe that would be enough to justify removing the gussets to save weight in future production. For example, the bumpers I’ve seen/used this year were.. an ‘83 Merc gusset bumper, a ‘79-‘80 Vic gusset, and a ‘87 Lincoln non-gusset.

I have a couple questions about square ford bumpers, first off how much better are the gusseted vic bumpers over the non Gusseted? What years did the gusseted bumpers come on? And the front bumpers are what I want correct? And what are the gusset bumpers worth?

Can any of the 70s bumpers pass off as an 80s bumper and are they stronger?

Quick question. I've a late 80s vic running limited weld rules. I'll post rules in here. I'm confused on the bumpers. The bumpers on the car are aluminum backed bumpers. Wouldnt hold up I don't think. I have the 2x4x1/4 tubing. Could I just weld that square to the frame, front and back, and just cover it with the aluminum skin? Not trying to hide it at all just trying to make sure I don't get there and then scramble for a bumper last minute. Cause I haven't been able to find any other bumpers as of yet so I know I won't last minute. Any advice is appreciated. westernkentuckystatefair.org/demolition-derby-rules
