The only bumpers I run are the elites. 2 hard derbys so far and its straight. No seam welding or added plate.

The steel backed 74 and up bumpers.
They're decent but not loaded, pretty much a one run bumper.

I've always had decent luck with 74-79 bumBers...... Till this year. I broke one in half ( turned out rust was the reason) other bent down real hard. -broke in half- -bent-

Rears are almost always rotted and watch where the bracket bolts on the bumper, they like to rot there

74 elite bumpers are good if you find one you will see why. They dont all need to be loaded it depends alot on the car you run them on.

Go with the allum thunderbird bumpers. If I remember hearing right, these were on big block cars (460) and the steel bumpers were on the rest. They were pretty common on Lincoln. The alum is like 1 inch thick and it don't bend.... However it can't be welded to the car....

I did a little comparison tonight on several 80s ford bumpers. I have allways thought there were 3 79+ ford bumpers on full size. However I have noticed a 4th.... Here's the run down 79/ 80 had 2 vent holes ( don't have one to tear apart to look at so don't know the details on it) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Non gusset- 8 bolts at the top, longer curved chrome edges on the side ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gussets- at the bumper shock there are gussets, hard to look in and see them but they are there. Also has 8 bolts on top. Shock is held on with bolts not nuts, also has long sides ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Non gusset#2- 6 top bolts, it is narrower by about 6 inches, the sides are rough not nice and smooth. I believe these were on the 87-91 cars.

My 78 continental has aluminum bumpers on it, you're saying the from would be stronger than a regular steel backed sq body ford?

Not 100 percent sure but I think the allum bumpers may have diff thicknesses on the backing.

If I stumbled into them more than one every 4 years I'd do a comparison.... However I rarely see them...
