saw this question late but.... what I do is weld the spiders to each other, that's it. Some guys try to weld the spiders to the case but I've never been skilled enough as a welder to have confidence that I did it right (welding forged steel parts to cast iron parts). I also use an old bolt and melt it in there while I'm at it. I follow the alternating corner method.... melt a stick of 6013 in there, jump over to the diagonal corner and melt another stick in. Walk away for 10-15 minutes and do something else. Come back and weld the other two corners, walk away. Come back and rotate the axle until you can see in the opposite side and weld two corners, etc. Should take you four steps.
Also, do not weld the cross pin in the very center, this needs to float for proper axle endplay

Mine is stick welded, got through three derbies last year without a problem. Only the spider gears are welded.

^That has nothing to do with what is being discussed, but on a side note, a mig welder that costs more than 200 bucks could probably have taken care of that, I know the new one will.

If longer 1/2" studs are used to replace the stock studs, what is the knurl diameter needed.
Or if changing to 5/8 studs, what do the axle holes need to be drilled to for what knurl diameter. And are there any other issues concerning using 5/8 studs?

Just curious if anyone ever welds braces or anything on their 8 3/4 rearends like ive seen done to some GM ones? And what are the best places to buy the bigger axles and rearend parts? Thanks for the help.
