Exactly, I drilled through the oil feed ports to (tie) them together and tapped the hole for a plug. got about $30 in them.

I'd be more concerned about it if I had more trouble with them but usually the K car filter wrapped with seat belts and duct tape has worked for me, knock on wood. Now what has been a problem for me are the $#@& dipstick tubes. They were not considering demo derby when they designed those.

LOL every one of my big blocks have a smashed to f uck dipstick from the engine mount. real pain in the ass to get out also.

I'd love to combine the features of the Mopar big and small block engines to get the ultimate derby engine. I'd use the oil pump and filter location, dipstick location, and spark plug location of the small block with the distributor location, Y block design, intake design, and water pump design of the big block. Then get the torque and sound of the big block in the size envelope of the small block without sacrificing the reliability or heat management of either. Finally I'd design a stronger mounting system for the engine mounts than those silly little tabs cast into the side. Yee ha!

Wanting to re-freshen a Big block. Options are a 75' or 69' both 440's. Both hi milage. Any preferance between the two? Better heads, block, ect.. or no differences at all?

Depending on what you are going to do with it the newer block might be a better start due to the lower compression and therefore lower heat generation. You'll still have plenty of torque to move you around, and theoretically you'll be able to move around a little longer with that one.

define what exactly you want to do to these.... terms like "freshen up" and "rebuild" etc. can mean very different things to different people.
Generally I don't use 440's for derby because the market value is so high. A 69 440 is worth quite a bit more than the 75 since it has a forged crank and 906 heads so if I had to choose between the two for derby I would go with the 75

Well, these are my only two engines and they are both completly stock, never been re-build. I was just curious on the internals being better than the other as far as strength, durability. I do love the torque and power that the 440 gives for bulldozing! I'll go with the lower comp. motor like you guys said, less heat, ect.. I will prob just build the top end and re-use the bottom end parts. With all these new motors out these days i like to compete with em'!

yeah in that case I would leave the bottom of the engine alone and just have a valve job done on the heads. Be sure to use the steel shim head gaskets with the 0.020" compressed height, avoid the thicker composite ones because they will kill your compression and a 75 440 is already a tick under 8:1 static CR from the factory with the 0.020 gaskets.
... for the money you could sell a 69 440 for, you could buy a whole car with a running 318 in it... in my part of the world you could buy two...

a 500 cfm or a 600 cfm 4brl. will work fine.i run a 750 cfm edelbrock 4brl. on my 440 derby engine with no problems.and we use a 600 cfm on a 400 bigblock both run good and have won alot of derbys.
