If the dist. Is in the front it's a BB if it's in the back it's SB. If it's is a BB you will have a 727 and if it's a SB you have ether a 727 or 904. If the trany pan is square it's a 904 Hope that helps.

If it is a big block it would be a 413 or 440,worth saving? yes. Depending on the style of engine it could be used as is for derby or would need to be modified to a stock rb intake and stock bb heads ,waterpump, oil pan, etc. Trans will be a short shaft 727 w/bolt on yoke. To use it in your gm trucks just keep a section of drive shaft. Unless you have parts to convert it over ,not worth the hassle. Hope that helps ya .

dist. is i the front, so we concluded that it is a bb with a 727. And im pretty sure its not injected, Or what not. Now i just gotta get the numbers. I figured id have to do the whole drive shaft modifying gig along with the oil pan, but what about the water pump? clearance issues? or hose placements?. I dont have any plans for it yet, so im just trying to figure out what it is. So this isnt real important, just off season BS.
Anyways, thanks alot.

I've seen all kinds of goofy things that were classified as a "motorhome" big block. Everything from the industrial engine with the whacked out humongous water pump to something that wasn't any different from a car engine with 452 heads, standard water pump, and front sump oil pan. Oddball transmissions like the ones described above or a common passenger car 2wd transmission. Wish I could tell you exactly what to look for but it seems to run the gamut. I can tell you that yes it is worth something, but best advice I can give you is to just yank it out and post a bunch of pictures.

whats everyone's take on a 383? getting a 69 fury with one in and going to run it, itll be stock minus timing chain... i loved my 400 and have seen many 440s do awesome but never seen a 383 run... not much talk on them, have heard they do better for RPM's tho

If you like 400's you'll like 383's too. Same stroke, 4.25" bore vs 4.34" bore. 9:1 compression for the 383 vs. 8:1 for the 400. 1969 has 906 heads which are exactly the same as the heads on any other 1969 big block including the 440 6 pack. Forged crank internally balanced for the 383 vs. cast crank and externally balanced for the 400; so mind which torque converters you use when changing parts around. So basically it's a little bit smaller displacement but makes more power because of the SCR. Tough engine and loves heat. I consider the 383 and the 400 to be pretty much equal for derby use although you could argue that the lower SCR of the 400 makes it a little easier to manage the heat. In my experience it's not enough of a difference to really matter.

the 383 mopar is an absolute beast on the track. responds very well to cam upgrade and a 4 barrel carb.

440 question guys got a 440 that has been sitting awhile got it fired up and running today n after it got up to temp it billowed smoke from. im guessing oil blow by on the valve cover gasket any ideas and is this a normal problem for bbm and is it just as simple as getting new gaskets for it?
