Is there a seal or something under the "gear slector shaft" that will leak over time? I have this 727 thats leaking pretty good right under that piece. Worth replacing or just keep toping up? yes, I call it a shift shaft seal. if its a derby car cut the floor out above it and pry it out and drive a new one in. very common Be careful not to let the shifter shaft drop down and disengage itself from the mechanism in the transmission and won't shift gears for you.

The seal costs about 5 bucks and it's easy to change, so well worth avoiding the constant leak. Very common for this seal to fail. In a derby car you can get right to it because you cut away the floor above it for your shifter anyway. In a road car they make a special tool that gets it out quite nicely without cutting the floor or unbolting the trans.

Good info! Got the levers off but now that seal is a "B" to get out without the proper tool. It is nice to have the floor cut out to do this tho.. Keep jabbin away at it

Just picked up an 85 prospector 2wd. It has a 727 in it, is there any difference in this and the older style. It is behind a small block. Is this original, did they make them this late, or is it swapped in.

for derby use do i really need to worry about whether or not a 318 convertor is behind a 318 or a 360 behind a 360, I have been told the vibration is unnoticeable unless you are driving on the highway, any thoughts?

You will notice! If its a 360 converter behind a 318it you can chizel the weights off the converter. If its a 360 engine you have to the 360 balanced converter. If you have both converters you can use the flexplate as a template to weld the 360weights weights on to the 318 converter. If that I makes sense?

it's a great way to create some extra clearance for your bearings!
(that's a joke, please don't take that as serious advice)

I've got an old style 727 out of a push button imp, wondering if there is a kit to change to lever instead of cable. I'm sure a good machinist could do it easily, me not so much. The trannies mint is why I'm bothering. Thanks Clint Have the same thing every anyone find anything on this?

Ive had no problems with the vibrations.

Will a stock 727 or 904 shift out of low on its own if given enough rpms?
