ive ran a few shockers and imo the biggest trick isn't so much as stopping them from bending but controlling where and when they bend helps more in the long run [/quote] you got it right here, people talk all day along about stretching the shocks and all that jazz but if your on a fast track or not well built behind the a arms , making it stronger in the front is a joke. twisted66 make sure you plate the inside of the frame rail right where the firewall mounts are...they go there once there strengthen upfront....

built a few of these cars and seems to me it's impossible to predict where they are going to bend, especially with very stock rules. i would prefer they all bend at the firewall if it was up to me.

possibly a little of both but mostly pinning through the frame rails

Just a quick question would a big block 383 bolt right in a 77 new yorker if it has a small block from factory. found one with a bad motor. and am curious.

not directly, big block and small block motor mounts are in different places on the frame although the trans mount is in the same place for either so use that to gage from. First you would need big block spool mounts from a 74-78 400 or 440, then you will need to cut the mount receivers off the frame and relocate them back a bit. Use the trans mount to locate your new spot

That's just what you would need to do to get the motor mount to line up and the stock tranny mount be used

First you would need big block spool mounts from a 74-78 400 or 440, then you will need to cut the mount receivers off the frame and relocate them back a bit. Use the trans mount to locate your new spot Does this in turn move the motor back some or is it just nescessary to make it fit? the trans mount is in the same place on the chassis for big or small block, so if you have a driveshaft that is the right length for a small block 727 it will still work for a big block 727 and the mounts themselves are interchangeable... so are the frame crossmembers. Where it gets tricky is the motor mounts. Because the big blocks have the oil pump hanging off the side of the engine, the block location for the motor mounts is restricted and they placed it a few inches further towards the rear than was the case for the small blocks. This is reflected in the relative location of the receivers on the frame... if you picture the trans mount as your datum, then the distance to the theoretical center of the big block receivers in the X direction is LESS than the same distance for the small block receivers. In other words, the big block receivers are closer to the trans mount than the small block. If you put a small block engine in a big block chassis, it will sit closer to the firewall than intended, the oil pan sump will interfere with the steering crosslink, and the trans mount will sit a few inches behind the spot where the crossbolt expects it to be. Any of this can be overcome with some light fabricating. Personally, I don't care to spend the extra time fooling with it so if it was originally a big block car then that's what I put in it, and vice versa. If you don't have that option then bust out the torch & welder and get to work ;D

Will a 318 fit the 400 mounts on sub? Im ok with it being a little farther back, if it will fit with the lower section of firewall still intact. Can I can heat and bend the pitman arm, idler arm, and possibly the drag link to gain clearance for the pan? Then redrill or fab up the tranny mount. And cut out the top part of the firewall for additional clearance for the distributor? I read somewhere that the small block will sit too low? Is that with the SB mounts or do you need BB mounts? Or do I need to cut the perches off the sub and fab them up higher? I have the sub removed so fabbing somthing up is not a big deal. Its my first Mopar and I have always ran SBCs I need some advise before I get started. I want to do whatever fabbing is nescessary before I reinstall the sub.
Please PM me if nescessary
I dont ask for help often but Im sure this swap has allready been done a thousand times in Mopar land. And I dont want to waste a bunch of build time recreating the wheel for no reason.

Ive learned a couple things about shockers so far. They have way too many bolts holding the front clip together, getting to the motor mount bolts sucks, and do not pull the transmission crossmember out with pressure on the torsion bars....lol
