I have a 350 chevy engine that I recently took a turbo 350 off of. The torque converter from the 350 is still bolted to the flywheel. My question is will a turbo 400 transmission work with the torque converter that was used with the turbo 350? Can I just slide the 400 right on?

Yes it will work but no you can't just slide the transmission up on the converter and bolt it to the engine

You need to put converter in the trans and spin it in before bolting converter to flywheel

You need to spin it a few times while lifting up on the center hub that rest in the crank. It has to lock into the pump correctly. And it has to stay put while you install the trans. Some mechanics wire ot zip ties hold it back while installing the trans. After you bolt the trans to the block you should be able to spin the converter easily before you put the bolts in from the converter to the flywheel.

So you bolt the converter to the flywheel last? After bolting the transmission to the block? Is it hard to get the bolts in from the converter to the flywheel with the transmission bolted up? Sorry, first timer over here.

No its pretty simple. As you put bolts in you'll turn flywheel to get to all of them once you have them all started you'll tighten them

yup when pulling a trans ALWAYS pull converter bolts first so converter goes with trans, hell of a less mess too!!
on install a converter has to be slid into the pump and spun, almost feels like you go through two clunks of engagement and you'll know your in all the way
Reinstall trans, bolt up bell housing bolts, IF bell doesn't easily pull to the block, STOP, your converter isn't all the way engaged and you run the risk of snapping the bell ears and other bad stuff.
If trans pulls up nice, you should have about a half inch gap between converter and fly wheel, slide converter out till it touches flywheel and finger start the first bolt, turn motor and do the other two bolts BEFORE tightening all bolts.
Tighten bolts and finish off the rest.

When installing your trans, with the converter fully seated in the pump, the gap should be 3/16" to 5/16" (Hopefully not 1/2"). You should be able to spin the converter easily before you bolt it to flywheel. You don't wanna pull the converter out of the pump a half inch.

Make sure the converter isn't dry inside. I rotate it clockwise as I'm lightly pushing it on. It will make a thud sound and feel it drop in a little bit. Keep rotating converter while pushing lightly, it will thud and drop in again. It should do it 3 times total to get where it need to be. Like they said you should have 3/8 of an inch gap between the mounting pads on the flexplate and pads on the converter. Should spin freely.

Make sure to fill converter with trans fluid before installing it, not completely full but half so it doesn't spill, I rotate it while filling to get the fluid to settle and achieve proper fluid level. I believe it'll fill when you start the motor, but filling before saves a little time adding fluid later. I'd change converter seal too while it's open too!

So i have a 1984 caprice with the 305 and 700r4, had to get a quadrajet to get the engine running and did some tuning up. Filled up/checked all the fluids, so it has trans fluid. Went to move it and it seems like it doesnt want to move until pretty high rpms. Anything i should check that i could be missing, or am I going to need to drop in a new trans?
