Any suggestions on a brand of spool, or where to buy? Check quick performance. You will need new carrier bearings, crush sleeve and it wouldn't hurt to put a pinion seal in since your in there.

I got mine off of speedway for like 105 bucks. Yes get all of what is mentioned, and you may need shorter ring gear bolts (I did on mine). I just finished a 9" for about a thousand bucks. That was pinion brake, axle savers, nerat yoke, full spool, 4.71 gears. The only used thing was the housing and axles (31 spline). Im sure you could cut cost making some of the things yourself.

For this purpose, what is the difference between a mini spool and a full steel spool, andy why wont a mini spool be sufficient? Sorry for all the dumb questions, but I haven't done anything with rear ends until now.

Mini spool goes in place of the spider gears and still uses the cross pin. a full spool completely replaces the carrier and spiders with a "solid" piece of machined steel.

Maybe im not understanding correctly, but wouldnt a mini spool be about the same as welding the spiders then, or is it not a solid/locking piece?

But with a mini you are still relying on the center pin in the carrier and the stock carrier itself. While a full spool the center carrier gets tossed in the scrap pile.

Ok makes more sense now. So with a full spool, does the ring gear just bolt to that?

With a full spool all this damage should not happen.Mini spool if the center pin breaks well you can see the results.I'll let you decide on what to buy.lol on the plus side, at least you didnt weld the axle to the center pin. Haha
